Dutch-born IMANU has long outgrown his previous moniker ‘Signal’. But what about his favorite interests outside of music? We put IMANU through its paces with our Show and Tell interview.
I used to play and watch a lot of RuneScape content as a kid and that’s how I first discovered dubstep.
I ended up showing this song and a few others by this artist to my classmates and found a small group that was into it! Having people around you who follow the same weird music as you 🙂
I have a great love for cooking
It is the deep approach that Heston has that is very inspiring. Analyzing the purpose and reason behind things and applying them to forward thinking processes is something I enjoy.
Fashion is probably my second love after music
I see it as more than a garment, it is wearable art at its core. It’s designers like Rick Owens and Yohji Yamamoto who, in my opinion, are at the forefront of darkness in clothing, focusing on form, fabric and art, rather than relying on color to highlight their vision.
We are back to cooking again!
Peter Goossens is a Michelin star chef from Belgium who used to have a program where he would reinterpret classic Belgian dishes in a Michelin star way.
I think this way of thinking can be applied to music as well, taking classic sounds like ‘Think Break’ or some Reese basses and putting them in a new light.
My city, Rotterdam!
I like it as a notable city in the Netherlands, being the only city without a classic city center (due to World War II).
A modern cityscape, a very cultural population, fashion, great food and great public transport. One of those places where when I’m bored, I can go downtown and always have something to do.
I am a huge anime fan
I think Code Geass is my favorite. An anime psychological thriller, but fantasy? Just amazing to me.
I would always recommend this anime to people who are into crime TV shows, especially as an introductory anime, along with Death Note. I think both of these perfectly bridge the gap from a more realistic crime to a fantasy world.
Ronaldinho is one of my favorite players ever
I used to play a lot of FIFA games back in the day but my favorite was FIFA Street. A game based on the actual game you as a child play with your friends. Doing tricks, laughing, getting angry when someone punches you – all things are inspired by Ronaldinho, who I’m pretty sure inspired a whole generation of kids. An infectious smile, the best tricks.. What’s not to love about him?
As a child, I was very interested in cars
I remember my mom bought me a little book about trucks when I was about 2-3 years old. I’d be on the road pointing at trucks and yelling “truck!” (“truck” in French). I played all the early Need For Speed games and my dad took me to a RAI convention in Amsterdam once. This led me to look for Dutch car brands, which are quite hard to find! I stumbled upon Spyker for a while and learned about the Spyker C8 and immediately fell in love.
Memento is my favorite movie of all time
The movie that really got me into Christopher Nolan. I thought movies weren’t for me, being exposed to romcoms, Marvel, and Christmas movies until someone told me about this movie. The
reluctantly checked it out and immediately fell in love. I started watching a lot of Nolan movies like the Batman trilogy, Interstellar, The Prestige, and I found myself loving movies again.
Other movies I’ve really enjoyed since then are Bladerunner and Shutter Island.
Every 20-year-old Dutch person knows about KUD
The worst of the worst humor, making it the best of the best.
Something about the Dutch language makes everything so much funnier than it should be. Fortunately, they’ve started subtitling some of their more recent work. Unfortunately, I don’t think they convey the humor nearly enough. Still enjoyable though!
