After Mary Jane’s Bakery opened its doors Monday, the smell of fresh baked goods will be on Main Street.
Owner Julie Weeden has fond childhood memories of her grandmother, Mary Jane Burroughs of Columbus, Ohio.
“My grandparents had some bars and pubs in Columbus and I remember when they retired and moved to Florida, my grandmother would always send everybody … a styrofoam cooler at Christmas time,” Weeden said.
She remembers digging through the packaging.
“It’s going to be full of her Christmas cookies, just plain cookies. Santa Claus looked like Santa Claus, the wreath was beautiful and painted.
“I want to take away from her and keep her legacy alive with baked goods,” she said. “We started the business 12 years ago when my grandfather died. Before she died, she gave me her family recipe, so after she died, we started the business, naming it after her and using our family recipe.
The bakery was originally located in Chillicothe, Ohio in 2010. Three years later, Weeden moved into retail.
“I’ve been in retail for the past seven years but I decided to get back into it,” she said. “We are known for our cinnamon rolls. We also use cookies. We make a wide variety of cookies, bundt cakes, cake pops.
There will also be holiday themed and seasonal products in the coming months.
“We like to pride ourselves on fresh, local products. What you see, we make. We don’t freeze serve. We don’t freeze anything. All of our baked goods are from us, fresh, local. I think that’s one of the great things. We work with local farmers to raise our eggs and We work to source and produce our meat,” she said. We have seen a positive response from the community.
In the future, Weeden plans to offer DoorDash delivery and text ordering. The crew is on six with herself and her daughters.
After the grand opening, Wieden said, the bakery will serve soups, salads and sandwiches. She said that the grand opening program is yet to be booked.
Wendy Anderson, director of the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce, said Wholesome Bakery is welcome in town.
Now that we have Giancinta’s (Gelato & Cafe) and Newellstown Diner in St. Clairsville, we can cater to anyone’s sweet tooth or coffee needs in St. Clairsville, so we are very happy and welcoming.
The bakery is located at 110 W. Main St. Available at A place that used to house the love of pierogis until the business moved to Wheeling’s Center Street. Hours are Monday – Friday 6am to 6pm and Saturday 1am to 5pm. Call 740-433-9390 for more information.
