Washington – If the unofficial start to the Chris Caputo era for GW men’s basketball is any indication, the Buff and Blue can pack some offensive punch. Starting their first game on the floor of the Charles E. Smith Center, transfer students Max Edwards and EJ Clark found the iron type in a good spot, as the pair connected on a combined 5-of-9 shooting from long range. It sparked GW’s dominant offense against the home club in a 78-61 contest.
Mainstay James Bishop IV had his fingerprints on the win, playing both on and off the ball effectively, scoring a career-high 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-7 3pt. FG), and a game-high six assists, his Atlantic 10 All-Conference. It shows bonafides. Edwards added 18 and Clark added 11, a promising sign for a backcourt that is expected to score for the club this season.
Clarke, Quanzi Samuels and Keegan Harvey, who are missing the services of Brendan Adams and Hunter Dean due to injuries, also took advantage of the opportunity to put on a 3-point shooting show Sunday that saw the Smith Center play last year. Samuel knocked down a pair on four attempts and the 6’11” Harvey stretched the floor for three triples on two of his attempts. As a team, GW shot 15-of-31 with Ricky Lindo Jr., Amir Harris and Daniel Nixon also getting in on the action.
GW led wire-to-wire and held a massive 29-point lead, more than doubling the visitors’ lead at 53-25 early in the second half.
With preseason practice and an exhibition game now in the rearview, the season begins when Virginia State comes to district next Monday night, Nov. 7 for a 7 pm tip on ESPN+.
