Columbus, Ohio – The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (3-3) defeated No. 5 Georgia Tech (6-1) in four sets (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23) to win the Georgia Tech Classic. . Sunday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd. This is the Buckeyes’ third straight top-10 win.
The Buckeyes used a pair of 6-0 runs to take control of the first set, winning 25-19. The Yellow Jackets used an early 5-0 and later 5-1 run to win the game 25-20. Ohio State went on an 11-1 run to take an early lead in the third set and withstood a late push from Georgia Tech to win the match 25-21. The Yellow Jackets took control of the fourth set and led 19-15 before six straight Buckeye points gave OSU a lead that would not be relinquished. The Buckeyes held off GT to win the fourth by a 25-23 margin.
How did it happen?
Georgia Tech started the match with a pair of kills. Genesia Moore’s first kill started a 3-0 run to give Ohio State its first lead of the game at 5-4. The Buckeyes extended the run to six unanswered points to take an 8-4 lead before GT responded with back-to-back points. The Yellow Jackets called a timeout following a 5-0 Buckeyes run to extend their lead to 14-7. A three-point run by GT cut OSU’s lead to 16-11, but Ohio State scored three of four to take a 19-12 lead. Back-to-back OSU points gave the Buckeyes a 21-14 lead and the second Yellow Jackets forced a timeout of the set. A solo block by Adrian Powell set up the Buckeyes for the set point. GT scored on three consecutive points before OSU secured the 25-19 win.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the second set as the teams traded service errors. The Buckeyes took their first lead at 3-2 on a Gabby Gonzalez layup before an 8-2 run gave GT a 10-5 lead and forced a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State got back within two at 12-10 after scoring five of its seven points in the period. GT used a 5-1 run to extend its lead to 18-12 and force the Buckeyes to end another timeout. After a timeout, Ohio State scored the next two points on kills from Gonzalez and Riley Rader. The Buckeyes got within four at 23-19, but lost the contest by a 25-20 margin.
Ohio State took the lead in the third set as the teams traded service errors again. The teams were tied at each point until a 4-0 Buckeyes run gave OSU a 7-4 advantage and forced GT to call a timeout. A pair of layups from Rader helped extend Ohio State’s lead to 13-5 with five unanswered points, forcing another Yellow Jackets timeout. GT responded to OSU’s 6-0 run with a 5-0 run of its own to trim the lead to 14-10, prompting an Ohio State timeout. Georgia Tech extended the run to 8-1 to cut the Buckeyes’ lead to two at 15-13. OSU responded by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 21-15 lead on a Raider kill. A Yellow Jackets error gave the Buckeyes a set point at 24-18.
GT scored first to start the fourth set. OSU took its first lead at 4-3 after three straight points. The teams exchanged points because there were eight matches when the set was tied at 10. Georgia Tech used a 5-0 run to break the tie and take a 16-12 lead before Gonzalez responded with a kill. After back-to-back GT kills, Ohio State called timeout 18-13. The Buckeyes scored the next two points on a kill by Adria Powell and kills from Powell and Gonzales. An ace by Gonzalez forced a Georgia Tech timeout as the Buckeyes got back within two at 19-17. A successful Ohio State run tied the set at 19. The Buckeyes went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-19 lead and end the Yellow Jackets’ period. Georgia Tech tied the set at 21 with a timeout and then at 22 and 23. Back kills from Rader and Mac Podraza sealed the game for a 25-23 win.
