Organic cost share certification program

Vermont Agricultural Food and Markets Agency If you paid fees to receive USDA organic certification between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets has financial assistance to reimburse you.

Through funding through the US Department of Agriculture, newly certified or recertified organic producers and inspectors are eligible for reimbursement.

The fee can be up to 50% of direct certification costs. The maximum payout per verification limit is $500. The four boundaries are crops, livestock, wild crops and management.

Allowable costs include application and inspection fees, organic verification costs, user fees/sales reviews, and postage.

The deadline to apply for the refund is November 1. Payment is first come, first served.

Local food price reports

The Ag Agency, in partnership with USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, has a weekly price report on the Local Food Information Monitoring Program for farmers market meat, produce and eggs, as well as monthly cattle prices.

If you are a consumer who buys meat and produce or pays for your products, the program has average prices and ranges for various market vegetables, meat and eggs. There are also average prices and ranges for retail and wholesale beef.

The information comes from farmers markets and beef producers in Vermont. It is published on our website.

UVM extension Maple business programs

The University of Vermont has two majors offered through the Maple Management Program.

The Fall Webinar Series is Wednesdays from August through October at 7:00pm ET. These free events cover topics such as succession and transition planning, financial planning and market development. You can see the descriptions here.

Raw Dairy Class: Learn how to make aged cheese

Join rural Vermont at the Handspun Cow Education Homestead in Tunbridge for a raw milk class on aged cheese making.

The class focuses on making Alpine-style hard cheese using kefir grains for culture. Each participant can take homemade grains to make his own aged cheese.

The class teacher is Kalynn Campbell, a homemaker who makes and grows her own food and clothing, including all dairy products. She has more than 10 years of experience in milking animals both commercially and at home.

The room is $20-40 per person (sliding scale). Registration is required.
