San Diego Wave FC closes out Torero Stadium in three-point fashion

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Wave Futbol Club (8-5-4) defeated the Houston Dash (7-5-4) tonight 3-1 in front of a sellout crowd for their final game at Torero Stadium. San Diego Wave FC brought the heat with a three-goal statement win with goals scored by Alex Morgan, Amirah Ali and Sofia Jakobsson.

Houston’s Ebony Salmon opened the scoring early in the 7th minute with a shot from inside the box for the visiting team’s only goal of the night.

Wave FC responded quickly in the 13th minute to tie the score. Striker Alex Morgan beat the keeper with a stunning left-footed strike to record her 50th career NWSL goal and 12th of the 2022 season. Morgan now leads the Golden Boot Race once again, followed by by Sophia Smith who has 11 goals.

San Diego Wave FC continued to fight in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts with two more goals. In the 67th minute, after much action inside the Houston box, Amirah Ali finally put the ball into the net from close range to put Wave FC ahead 2-1. Assisted by Makenzy Doniak, Ali’s game-winner was her second goal of the regular season and second goal in the last three games as she builds form.

In the 90th minute, Sofia Jakobsson made a breakaway run and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for her first goal for the club. The shot came from a tight angle and was assisted by Doniak, her second assist of the night.

San Diego Wave FC now embarks on a two-game road trip, taking on the Portland Thorns on Saturday, August 27th at 7:30pm PT, followed by the Washington Spirit on Saturday, September 10th at 2:00pm PT. After much anticipation and excitement, the club then return home to open at the Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, September 17 with tickets for one match available now.
