The Hokies will meet the Monarchs for the fourth time on Friday

Virginia Tech and Old Dominion begin their 2022 campaign Friday night at 7 pm ET on ESPNU in Norfolk, Virginia, and it will be only the fourth time the Hokies have met on the football field, where they lead the series 2-1.
The two schools, located roughly 300 miles apart, opened the series in 2017 in Biscburg with a convincing 38-0 win for the Hokies. The matchup will continue in the future, with the Monarchs returning to Lane Stadium in 2023 for Tech’s season opener and playing eight times after that. From 2024-31. Sept. 7, 2019 – Virginia Tech 31, Old Dominion 17 (Blacksburg, Va.)
In Tech’s most recent home opener, the Hokies lost to Boston College 35-28 to open the season, but found an early edge against the Royals thanks to a series-opening touchdown drive. Tech went up 17-3 at halftime and led 31-17 with quarterback Ryan Willis throwing for 272 yards and two touchdowns, adding 34 yards and a touchdown on the ground. It was arguably the biggest play of the game when Willis connected with receiver Hezekiah Grimsley. A one-handed touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Sept. 23, 2017 – Virginia Tech 38, Old Dominion 0 (Blacksburg, Va.)
In the first matchup between the two programs, Tech single-handedly won 38-0 to mark former defensive coordinator Bud Foster’s 33.rd Career closure. The Hokies don’t give ODU any space on offense, forcing the Kings to convert 2-for-14 third down chances and allowing less than 150 yards of total offense. On the Hokies’ offensive side, running back Steven Peoples rushed for 135 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Peeples’ receiving and running touchdown in the final 6 minutes of the first half helped Tech enter the locker room with a 17-0 lead. Under center, quarterback Josh Jackson accounted for 298 yards through the air and had three touchdowns himself.
