Who can ever forget Sarah Jessica Parker’s eye-catching entrance in the Sex And The City Reboot, all clad in a signature Falguni and Shane creation? The dress was a kind of clarion call, heralding the arrival of Indian craftsmanship to foreign shores. Falguni and Shane Peacock have been extremely unapologetic about the use of feathers, prints and threads in their designs. They have married modernism with maximalism and have made converts from such international celebrities as Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. Be it runways, concerts, red carpets or even casual chic, their creations are melting hearts and minds globally. The designer duo take their success with a grain of salt, claiming they have a long way to go before resting on their quilting laurels. On the dynamic designers as they speak eloquently about their international success…

When did you realize that, as one of the leading fashion designer duos, you have quite an international presence? so much stronger?

When we first exhibited in 2004, our entire collection was bought by international retailers such as Harrods, Villa Moda and others. It was the first time we realized we had an international advantage. We then showed at London Fashion Week, eventually moving on to Miami Fashion Week.

At Miami Fashion Week, we realized that the next step should be to show at Los Angeles Fashion Week. And then, shortly after that, we found ourselves on the New York Fashion Week runways.

Beyoncé wore that iconic gold dress to the Wearable Art Gala in March 2018, and then Jennifer Lopez wore two of your other designs to the Billboard Music Awards and the Kiss concert, respectively. How different is it to design for something like a LIVE concert and then a red carpet look?

We believe that the design process, whether for the red carpet or a live concert, should be enjoyable. We always try to have fun bringing the celebrity’s vision to life. We try to see what we can do differently and how close we can get to their imagination of clothing. And when we get it right, it’s exciting for us.

The West is more about dresses and gowns, and in India there are ethnic wears as well. What kinds of challenges do you face as a creator with such a global presence?

Gone are the days when ethnic and traditional were the only choices for Indian red carpet looks. It’s all about looking your best, no matter what the ensemble is. Be it Indian or international, we strive to bring out the authentic personality of the celebrity using our designs and creativity. So there is no such challenge in itself when working with creators across the globe.

Let’s talk about the iconic lehenga that Carrie Bradshaw wore in And Just Like That. How did it come about and what was the experience of designing for such an iconic character who is also a fashion icon?

To be honest, this is the first time we haven’t designed for the star. The said lehenga was part of our Mon Amour Jag Niwas campaign that was released in March 2021. A month or two later, we’re told Sarah Jessica Parker spotted the lehenga and chose to wear it for And Just Like That. We were thrilled to hear this as she is truly a fashion icon whose style is impeccable.
