Virginia Tech extended President Tim Sands’ contract at a university board meeting this week in Newport News.
Sands’ presidency began in 2014 and his contract extends through the 2027 academic year, according to an announcement from Virginia Tech. Sand’s salary details have not yet been finalized, according to an email from a university spokesperson.
According to data from The Chronicle of Higher Education, Sands in 2010 He earned $714,538 in 2021, with a starting salary of $614,640, which ranked him 50th on a list of 196 public college presidents’ salaries.
In a university announcement, Sands said he is honored to continue his commitment to Virginia Tech.
“During my time here, our students and faculty have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to improving the human condition,” Sands said in the announcement. “Their commitment has fueled demand for a Virginia Tech education and generated unprecedented support and engagement from alumni and friends.”

He said his work is not done, and he appreciates the opportunity to be more involved.
“Tim Sands continues to be a thoughtful, strategic and visionary leader for the interests of this university and the commonwealth,” said Letitia “Tish” Long, director of the school’s board of visitors, in the release. Through remarkable consensus building, partnerships and success, Tim has ensured that the University’s land grant mission and institutional commitment, ut prosim (let me serve), align with new opportunities in today’s rapidly changing world.

At this week’s board meeting in Tidewater, members toured local university facilities and discussed issues related to freedom of speech and academic freedom in higher education, access and affordability, as well as the current state of the two athletics, the announcement said.
