Even though starter Jeff Sims is a Georgia Tech guy heading into the 2022 season, that doesn’t mean transfer Zach Gibson won’t take advantage of the opportunities it presents.
Gibson was available to speak to the media following Tech’s practice on Friday. He talked about how he thought about what it would be like to play for quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke when he entered the transfer portal after last season, even though Weinke had not yet been hired at Georgia Tech.
“It’s funny because when I first played Portal, my mom didn’t know, maybe one day you’re going to play for Coach Weinke, and he wasn’t named the quarterback coach at the time. I worked out and signed all the papers and it was all public… It’s crazy how God works. He’s amazing. He’s a great man and a great leader and he’s expecting the best from everyone. Day and he’ll take nothing less, it’s been a lot of fun.
He was then asked if there was any connection to Weink, and Gibson said there was none, but that he and his father grew up Florida State fans and enjoyed watching highlights of Weink playing.
“I didn’t have any contact with Coach Weinke before he took over. Growing up, I was a Florida State fan. My dad went to Florida State watching his highlights when he was young and the game action passed that. He threw to Snoop Mininis. I wouldn’t say that was my idol growing up, but like , I definitely looked up to him, to play quarterback the right way and at a high level. Fast forward to 2022 and I’m playing. For him. Every day I’m still right, I don’t know if I’m going to call him star struck, but he’s really a coach.
Playing for Weinke isn’t the only thing Gibson loves about playing at Georgia Tech. His younger brother, Tyler, is a freshman offensive lineman, and Gibson said it was crazy to do something the two had always talked about.
“It’s unbelievable. We were talking about the same thing before I hit the portal because we always wanted to play against each other, but when I signed and went to Akron, it felt like it was never going to happen. When I got to the portal, Coach Collins reached out and told me that I had an opportunity to come here and I couldn’t pass it up.”
“Playing with him, seeing him every day, it’s like a blessing, he’s the biggest blessing in the world and getting to work with him. I know the type of kid he is and his goals and what he wants to do. The growth I’ve seen from him, when he got here in June, he’s a completely different kid. He’s growing up a lot now, making new friends and being on his own and starting school obviously. He’s changed but for an 18 year old he’s been doing a great job. He’s trying to do it. He’s better than himself every day.”
As the Yellow Jackets’ number two quarterback behind Sims, Gibson is likely to be eliminated. He has good depth and will make the most of every opportunity he gets this season.
