104-year-old business Ellezi Hardware is closing its doors

Biloxi, Miss. (WLOX) – A 104-year-old business in downtown Biloxi has closed its doors. Wednesday was the last day of business for Elezi Hardware.

People come in not only to buy but also to show respect.

His wife, Sandra Canet, had mixed feelings.

“It’s bittersweet because I’m so excited for the next chapter of my life,” she said. But I miss all the people who became my customers and friends.

Cannette took over from her father 19 years ago.

“I’ve never worked anywhere else,” she said. “It’s the only place I’ve ever worked in my whole life, which is strange in itself, but not for me. Because this is my life’s work and my family’s business. That’s all I wanted to do.”

It’s a family heirloom that will be hard to replicate.

“We’ve tried to make everyone who walks in the door feel like they’re coming in to buy three nails for a nickel, or they’re coming in and buying a whole list of things for $100,” said daughter-in-law Dena Ellezzi. “We respect everyone who comes through the door.”

There is some good news. Biloxi brothers Glenn and Jeffrey Ellis agreed to buy the business. They say the plan is to expand the business but keep all inventory and the “Ellzey” name.

It should be reopened before the end of the year.
