6 industry conversations that won’t scream ‘OMG there’s a tech crash’ – TechCrunch

Journalists care a lot about tension, drama and symbolism. There are often times that seem like good news, like when a small scrappy startup gets seed capital to take a giant public, or a late-stage giant realizes that healthcare is just in its infancy. Lately, however, we’ve seen startups face major corrections at all levels, from double rounds of layoffs to valuation cuts to shutdowns. There was a lot of doom and gloom, but the story doesn’t stop there.

On Equity, the podcast I host with Alex Wilhelm and Mary Ann Azevedo, we spend a lot of time talking about both the highs and the lows. Today, I’d like to highlight six quotes that talk about stress, drama, and noise cancellation—but have nothing to do with tech failure (or tech decline). Enjoy!

  1. This episode between Alex and TC Brian’s warm-up is all about robots. Recorded before our most successful TC session ever: The Robotics Event, the pod dives into the eight million problems robots need to solve, LIDAR and hardware technology, and Heater is the only successful indoor robot it can think of.

  2. Before we released this as a podcast, I asked this question in the form of a tongue-in-cheek title: “YC Product Hunt, Product Hunt does a16z, a16z does YC.” As you can tell by that title and the title of this episode, we’re talking about how technology is full of copycats and what that means for the creative bar. It’s one of the parts that makes me love how circular this industry is — and how the rising tide can confuse and end a founder’s fundraising journey.

  3. Need we explain further? On this memorable Friday of the fair, the whole crew is starting to talk about a host of news — but mostly, Stripe and Plaid going from friends to rivals in one swift production move. Well, like a lot of quick moves and maybe some subtweets. This is the perfect show for anyone interested in fintech, competition and the art of pattern making.
