Like clockwork, it’s time to mark your calendars for another fashion month, the biannual, multi-day gathering of shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris where the next season’s biggest trends ultimately find their start. . . The upcoming shows, of course, beg the question of which fashion trends will dominate next spring, and some of the rising trends can already be a strong indicator. Recent seasons have seen fashion embrace the extravagant and logomania of the early 2000s, along with the almost dystopian core, Balenciaga, which a number of brands have been quick to pick up on. Then again, it seems like designers are meeting somewhere in the middle.
While it’s true that the trend cycle shows no signs of slowing down, most trends actually evolve into updated versions of themselves season after season rather than hitting a full swing of the pendulum all at once. So, after all, you can imagine that spring 2023 fashion could look like an advanced version of the trends you’re seeing today. For example, while fashion’s obsession with Y2K clothing has, until recently, harkened back to the era of mcbling and relatable styles (think the answer to “What would Destiny’s Child wear on the red carpet, circa 2002?”), recent developments on trend shows a grunge-inspired makeover on the street. That’s not to say we won’t see polar opposite trends emerge, however, as all signs (such as the return of the Canadian tuxedo) point to a new celebration of elevated fundamentals after a period of heightened maximalism.
Some Spring 2023 collections, like Mowolola’s debut at Paris Fashion Week, have already hit the runway, but the rest, and ultimately most of the trend proof, is yet to come. Until then, we’ve left some thoughts on the spring 2023 fashion trends you can look forward to.

Denim on Denim
What it lacks in novelty, the denim-on-denim trend (on its way to becoming the next It combo), it makes up for in flair. No longer just the Canadian tuxedo (standard jeans and a jacket), the future of denim looks a little different – Think bralettes and denim corsets, and mini or maxi skirts like skirts (and we can’t guarantee you won’t (also see a denim bikini.) For spring, skip blue denim and try the trend in green, yellow, or orange.

Goodbye Jorts, Hello Lorts
Jorts have suddenly become a defining trend of summer 2022 (we’re talking ultra-long, especially wide jorts), with fashion girls dressing Santa-style with tube tops and heels. Before you write it off as one of the many passing microtrends of the moment, it’s worth thinking about its potential to progress into something a little more versatile, such as is it sneakers or business casual.

Grunge from the past
If you’ve been secretly trying to shake off the collective nostalgia for 2000s fashion, better luck later in the year. While there’s no sign that Y2K wear will be getting the boot any time soon, spring 2023 could bring an aesthetic revamp (and you can already find a few designers on board)—think trading in Barbiecore and bedazzled jeans for more and wilder counterparts of the era.

Dresses over pants
If there’s a theme in fashion trends these days, it’s that anything goes. The conversation around sartorial self-expression feels bigger than ever, and with it come the most eclectic of key trends — some with unexpected layering combinations, such as dresses over pants. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it on, the huge variety of dresses and pants to choose from on the market make this pairing look completely different every time, whether it’s styling a fishnet dress over a bralette and jeans, or combining a long tunic dress with trousers.

Refurbished clamps
Maximalism has taken center stage for a few seasons now, but if the latest styles to hit the runway and blow up on social media are any indication, we’re going back to basics. However, a staple boom never comes without a few twists on the norm – Think jeans with standout details like cargo pockets or contrast stitching, taking styles like cargo pants into fancier territory and basic crop tops deconstructed or asymmetrical.

Illuminate
When fashion is in the midst of a dramatic pendulum swing, as it has been since the start of the pandemic, it’s not uncommon to see two trends coexisting that feel like the antithesis of each other. If you’re looking to move away from leather and bold hardware as Y2K takes on a tougher persona, try instead a combination of lighter shades and airy fabrics with garments such as lightweight, soft sheer and flowing maxi dress with ultra-feminine, spring details.

See through dresses
See-through dresses have taken on a new purpose in fashion, elevating it beyond its role as a designated beach cover-up until now, a style you’ll find on every fashion girl’s radar, especially in regards to their going out outfits. The progression of the trend into 2023 is likely to bring more creativity and risk-taking when styling the look (think taking bikini-style layering beyond the beach, or adding a vest over the top), as well as designers refreshing the classic sheer dress with additions such as deconstructed elements, statement silhouettes and embellishments.
