Port Huron, Mich. – Dan Paper, icon and famous entrepreneur Port Huronannounced that it was closing its doors to celebrate its 100th birthday.
The maker of sustainable paper, specialty paper and private label packaging, which has survived shutdowns and business downturns in the past, has struggled to navigate the economy since last March.
The slogan that prepares tomorrow’s papers today ends after 98 years of service.
“It’s very sad,” said Susan Horvath. “It’s a piece of Port Huron that won’t be here anymore.”
One hundred workers called it a sprawling stretch. Lake Huron Many take their children to school and then to work on the beach in a residential community.
But James Freed, chief administrative officer and Port Huron city manager, said Job One is relocating workers before the Nov. 18 deadline.
“We want to work with Michigan Jobs from the St. Clair County Economic Development Partnership to make sure we can make a seamless transition from forest paper to new industries,” Freed said. “Many employers look for and value the skills and work ethic of Forest Paper employees.”
Dunn Paper has six other locations, including a site in Menominee, Michigan. While the other facilities will remain open, management said in a published statement that it has become increasingly difficult to generate positive cash flow.
Rising paper pulp and energy prices have moved faster than the ability to adjust prices, according to a source within the company.
In the year In August 2021, Domtar Corp., another large employer with 200 employees, announced it would close its Port Heron mill in a sign of the times, but who will be left to make the paperwork for that sign?
