MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – When Susan Poole walks behind her door manufacturing business, Doors By Decora, she’s usually faced with piles of trash.
“We hired someone to come in and take out a lot of the trash last week, and now they’re piling it up again,” Poole said.
People have been sleeping outside for the past year. A temporary shelter has been set up.
Poole said the land is public and she has no problem with people being there, but now they are interfering with her business.
People are trespassing and vandalizing private property. Someone even stole her security camera.
“He climbed the poles there and took the camera down,” she said.
A new camera has been installed, but people continue to litter. Someone cut copper pipes on an outdoor air compressor, shutting down operations for hours.
“Honestly, I’m getting really bored,” Poole said.
The business owner said she called the police and the city several times, but nothing was done.
When WSFA 12 News reached out, the Montgomery Police Department said it has received one call in the last 60 days after a homeless person started a trash fire.
The police also released the following statement.
“Now that MPD is aware of the issue, we will provide additional security, provide homeless workforce resources, and advise the business owner regarding lighting, security and signage. MPD works closely with Montgomery’s business owners, residents and visitors and exhausts all avenues to address their concerns.
The city is making an effort to clear Montgomery’s streets of debris.
“They’re cleaning where the residents and the people of Montgomery can see, not behind our business where no one but us can see,” Poole said.
The city said it is looking into the matter further.
