As the Washington Chiefs look ahead to their season opener this Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, college football’s opening weekend offered plenty of entertainment over the holiday weekend… well, sort of.
The Georgia-Oregon game was a boat race as the Bulldogs reaffirmed that the SEC is in its own division, especially compared to the Pac-12.
The Ohio State-Notre Dame game was more compelling, but this weekend proved one thing: It’s Alabama and Georgia, then everybody.
But what about smaller, local schools?
The Virginia Tech-Old Dominion rivalry has always been a favorite among Washington football fans because it is an intra-state rivalry. On Friday, the Monarchs upset the Hokies 20-17 in Norfolk for their second straight win over a Power 5 program. For the first time in 2018, four years ago, after taking over Tech.
Of course, Taylor Heinecke is an ODU alumnus and the Chiefs have some former Virginia Tech stalwarts on the roster. To celebrate the win, Hennicki placed ODU shirts in the lockers of former Hokies Logan Thomas, Kendall Fuller and Joey Slye.

This is a Grade-A run from Hennicki.
Cheering on one’s alma mater is a weekly tradition for countless NFL players and Thomas, Fuller and Slay can attest to Friday’s upset. The same could be said for Heinkime, who had an Old Dominion jersey for his teammates.
If anyone was wondering if the former Hokies appreciated Heinecke’s move, they were surprisingly unreceptive. In fact, according to NBC Sports Washington’s Pete Haley, who spoke to Hennick, Fuller threw him to the ground in quick fashion.
Come on Fuller. Hennicki was trying to do something good.
Seriously, Heinecke must be trying for glory with the ODU win. The former Royals quarterback, a four-year backup for the Army Chiefs, set the Division I record for passing yards in a single game with 730 (!) in 2012, ranking second in the 2012 season.

Fortunately for Henike, this is the only time ODU will play Virginia Tech this season, so he’ll have bragging rights for at least the next 12 months. That could spell trouble for Thomas, Fuller and Slay, who will almost certainly be at the center of the season’s joke (and gifts from the quarterback).
