A shootout involving Mesa police officers and an out-of-state man wanted by authorities ended in tragedy on Sunday, August 21.

Hours after the shooting, crime scene tape was up and the car police say the suspect drove into Jimmy and Joe’s Pizzeria when the shooting began.

Police have clarified what led to the shooting.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety called Mesa police after they suspected a fugitive from Colorado was in the area. Mesa police sent plainclothes officers to investigate.

They sat and watched for a few hours. Officers found this car, a black SUV, and DPS matched the description of the Colorado fugitive.

That’s when the SWAT team was called.

Just before 5 p.m., the suspect left the store and got into his car, and a SWAT team attempted to take him into custody.

“At that point, he refused all orders. They drove into the car and drove into the front of the retail business and attempted to get out of the hold. Not only did that retail business have employees, it had customers inside as well.” Mesa Police Det. Richard Encinas.

He said that 5 to 6 people were in the pizzeria at the time and there were no injuries.

Mercedes Taylor, a neighbor, said she was shocked when she heard what happened.

“I was actually on the phone telling one of my friends, you know, about how safe Arizona is and how safe my neighborhood is and then I see the crime scene van and I’m like, yeah, maybe not,” she said. .

Mesa police are not yet releasing the suspect’s name or the charges the fugitive faces in Colorado.

As for the suspect’s condition, he underwent surgery and is expected to be fine.
