American Airlines has hired Ganesh Jayaram as its new executive vice president and chief technology officer.
Jayaram joins from Illinois-based John Deere & Co., where he held several key leadership roles, including vice president of information technology and vice president of corporate strategy and business development.
American CEO Robert Isom Jayaram said he will be responsible for the airline’s technology operations and strategic business objectives. He will join American on September 1.
“Ganesh has a proven ability to drive innovation for large and complex global organizations focused on operational reliability,” Isom said in a statement. “His leadership style, global expertise and success in building and implementing both business and technology strategy will serve him incredibly well as he steps in to lead our technology team.”
Jayaram said American and the airline industry are struggling with pilot and other staff shortage challenges, which have led to flight delays and some route cancellations and cancellations.
Among his duties is helping to shape technology strategy to advance customer and employee experience and satisfaction.
Jayaram has spent the last 15 years with John Deere. Since 2016, he has served as the chief information officer of the tractor company. Prior to Deere, it was held by Danaher Corporation and Canon USA Inc.
He received his bachelor’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) and his doctorate in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University.

Jayaram replaces Maya Libman, who had earlier announced that she would be moving to London for family reasons. Leibman understands the transition at the end of the year. In 2023, America will play a new role with international responsibilities.
Leibman joined American in 1994 and has served as the airline’s chief information officer since 2012.
“Maya has been a leading figure in American evolution for the past ten years,” Isom said. “Her leadership has left a lasting impression on our entire organization, and we are grateful for all she has done. She has prepared us well for this transition and we look forward to America’s continued leadership.
