An arsonist burned the premises of the Shoal Creek Saloon, the business is still open.

A Shoal Creek salon is repairing its patio after it caught fire, the Austin Fire Department said. The incident took place on Tuesday morning.

Shoal Creek Saloon owner Ray Canfield stressed that the business is still open – fortunately the fire did not affect the interior of the building. The patio is expected to be open in a few days.

In surveillance video, a man can be seen walking through the hallway, then something catches fire in the corner. The man goes, and the fire increases and begins to spread.

“It’s a tragedy, it’s a beautiful place, we’ve spent a lot of time and money on it,” Canfield said.

Janitorial crews cleaned up the patio, and Canfield said they still had to fix electrical wiring and find curtains, which caused the patio to overheat.

“If you come, you’ll have to wear a jacket until we get everything sorted out,” he said.

Right on the banks of Shoal Creek, the saloon has been flooded several times over the past three decades. The last major was in 2015.

“I’m definitely prepared for the flood,” Canfield said. “When it’s really raining, I’m ready to face it if something happens.”

He says they even have a flood response plan.

“We’re going to come back really fast because it’s important, we don’t want to lose momentum,” he said.

While the fire was a different type of disaster, Canfield said they were no less resilient.

“I don’t think there’s anyone better than us when it comes to coming back from a big accident and we’re going to prove it one more time here,” he said.

He said they won an Emmy for a PSA about emergency preparedness.
