Following the news that Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, Burberry has announced that it will be canceling the upcoming Spring/Summer 2023 London Fashion Week. A statement from the British luxury fashion house was shared with Hypebeast regarding the cancellation,

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.

As a mark of respect, we have made the decision to cancel our Spring/Summer 2023 runway show which will take place on 17th September in London.

We hope to see you in the near future.

As the Queen is mourned by her family, the United Kingdom and people around the world, the British government must put in place a complex protocol dealing with Her Majesty’s death. Dubbed “Operation London Bridge”, the plan is implemented on day zero, when the public is notified of the Queen’s death. Prince Charles immediately succeeds the throne and becomes King Charles III. The Queen’s funeral is expected to take place on the 10th, with heads of state, family members and guests attending the funeral held at Westminster Abbey.

The British Fashion Council recently confirmed that London Fashion Week will go ahead as planned, although the shows on the day of the Queen’s funeral will be cancelled. The BFC released a statement following the news of Her Majesty’s death, saying: “London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event and an important moment for designers to showcase their collections at a moment specific to the fashion calendar, we recognize the work that goes into this moment. Therefore, shows and collections presentations can continue, but we ask that designers respect the mood of the nation and the period of national mourning by taking into account the time of the release of the image theirs.” The BFC has also recommended that all “non-essential” events, including openings and celebrations, be canceled as the UK enters a 10-day period of mourning for the monarch’s death.

Burberry has yet to announce whether it will reschedule its SS23 show. There is currently no word on whether other brands showing at London Fashion Week will follow Burberry’s lead in canceling it.
