Pine Belt, Miss. (WDAM) – The city of Laurel celebrated the opening of a new roundabout on Wednesday morning.
The festival begins with a parade of vehicles passing through the town square, including city officials, police officers, fire trucks and owners of surrounding businesses.
The traffic structure is located on Central Avenue in downtown Laurel.
Laurel Mayor Johnny McGee said the roundabout was a replacement for a red-light intersection and believes the project will improve congestion in the area.
“The main goal is to make the traffic there at Sawmill and Leontyne Price easier and faster because you don’t have to sit around waiting at the traffic light to change,” Magee said.
The road was closed to traffic for months.
The construction of the plaza has reduced customer traffic for many businesses in the area. Those who wanted to visit downtown businesses had to park in a separate lot and walk to get there.
Local business owners are grateful that things are back to normal and hope to see an increase in customers as time goes on.
“Most of the businesses here at the end, we didn’t pay that much attention because the construction was going on, so it definitely boosts business. We are very excited about it,” said Wilson Commissioner General Manager.
Chad Knight, owner of Knight Butcher, agrees, saying the downtown Laurel community is better than ever.
“We’ve had great, strong local community support, and with tourists, the more the merrier,” Knight said. “So, we’re happy to be here, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.”
