salisbury – Food Lion Feeds has set a goal of providing 1 million meals to people in need based on sales from the annual Apple Bag campaign. Their customers exceeded that goal and served 4.5 million meals. The September 14-October 4 campaign was one of many Food Lion feeding efforts during Hunger Action Month.

Customers purchased specially marked bags of apples or made a cash donation at check-out to feed the nation’s largest local hunger relief organization and local member food banks in Food Lion’s 10-state area.

“More than 34 million people, including 9 million children, are at risk of hunger in America. “We are grateful to Food Lion Feeds for their continued commitment to providing food to communities in need through their Apple Bag campaign,” Lauren Bidron, vice president of corporate partnerships for Feeding America, said in a news release. “Our long-term partnership with Food Lion will help strengthen our response to the growing need for food aid.”

Since the apple bag campaign began in 2014, customers have helped provide more than 13 million meals. Food Lion Feed has helped provide more than 970 million meals to individuals and families since 2014, and has pledged to donate 1.5 billion meals by 2025.

“We know our neighbors rely on us to help feed their families,” said Kevin Durkee, manager of Food Lion Feeders. “We truly appreciate our customers’ partnership in fighting hunger with us. We are proud to support our food bank partners and local food agencies to help eliminate the difficult choices many families are forced to make when faced with hunger.”

A $1 donation helps provide at least 10 meals saved by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. The Apple Bag campaign provided five meals from every 50-cent dollar purchase made to America’s Feedlot and member food banks. Food Lion has pledged to donate at least $100,000 (the monetary equivalent of 1 million meals) during the campaign.
