LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The city of Las Vegas is closing in on 21 Fremont Street vacation spots, including the Fremont Street Experience and downtown Ogden, Carson, Main and 8th streets. The proposed curfew, however, does not include the Arts District, another popular nightlife area.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has confirmed that a shooting occurred Sunday morning in the Arts District. It took place near South Main Street and East Imperial Street, which led to the closure.
Jason Taylor, owner of Nevada Brow Works, doesn’t see problems like Fremont Street in the Arts District, despite its proximity.
“I never saw any fighting,” Taylor said. “We’ve never had any report of a fight or anyone pulling out a weapon. There’s never been anything like that on our property or campus, but I’ve heard very few and far too many stories.
The proposed curfew on Fremont Street means that no one under the age of 21 will be allowed on Fremont between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week.
Taylor said a curfew in the arts district would not be good for business.
“We don’t want a 9 o’clock curfew,” Taylor said. “We have families with heirs who are still enjoying it.”
On Monday, a Las Vegas City Council committee voted down the proposed curfew to go before the City Council at its next meeting. The vote was for the City Council to receive a report and presentation on the Fremont Street experience and information from Metro Police and why this proposed curfew is needed.
The proposed curfew does not include the Arts District, and Taylor said the business is family-oriented so it’s the right move.
“We have a different customer base than what you get down on Fremont Street,” Taylor said. “I don’t think the arts district needs a curfew.”
