Dorchester County, SC (WCCC) – Dorchester County broke ground Wednesday on a new 1,300-acre industrial park in St. George.
The 15-year-old project has been dubbed the Port 95 Business Park to highlight its location near I-95, a major distribution route for importers arriving at the Port of Charleston.
Port 95 Business Park will cost $100 million and will have three unique buildings, which means developers will build for lease, not for customers.
Dorchester County Economic Development Director John Truluck says one of the three buildings is too large, nearly a million square feet. This will be the largest unique building ever constructed in Dorchester County.
Truluck said there is a lack of manufacturing in the county, so building this business park will help them achieve their goal of bringing new companies to the area and local jobs. The county believes creating more jobs where people don’t have to commute should help with congestion on I-26.
“It’s great to have conceptual drawings on paper, but it’s great to see the site being cleared, to see construction materials moving. Then the next step is to see the buildings go vertically, so that’s always exciting for me because then it’s not just an idea, it’s almost true.” ” Truluc says.
The county is excited to move forward with this project so companies know there are products coming in and the community knows jobs are on the way.
Site construction is on track and Port 95 Business Park is expected to be completed by 2024.
A groundbreaking ceremony at St. George’s will begin at 2 p.m. at 4826 Highway 78.
