Fishtown strengthens security in the area with high-tech surveillance cameras.

With all the crime rampant in Philadelphia, community members are coming together to provide an important tool – surveillance.

“They approached us and asked if we wanted to add more cameras. It was a no brainer. It was like, ‘Why not?'” said Joe Steak general manager Stephanie Lee Ryan.

Gone are the days of blurry black-and-white surveillance footage in several parts of Fishtown where the Fishtown Business Improvement District used the city’s commercial security camera program.

Mark Collazo, the executive director, saw an opportunity to strengthen security in the area, adding more than 60 cameras to several intersections in Fishtown.

“We get paid for half of the camera installations. We install high quality security cameras at designated intersections, busy areas and with the permission of the property owner,” Collazo said.

The cameras are state-of-the-art and include 4K resolution and full-color night vision. You can also carry a license plate.

The cameras proved helpful to police in the murder case at Cecil B. Moore and Front Street.

“In our work with the police, we were able to identify the type of car and the front cameras and the Girard license plate. As a result, they were able to identify the driver and arrest him,” Collazo commented.

Daniel Renn is the Vice President of Sales with Omega Security Systems, who is responsible for installing these cameras.

“Fishtown is definitely giving us the latest and greatest technology,” Renn added. License plate cameras are game changers for the Philadelphia Police Department, he says. “They’re blown away. A lot of people install license plate cameras not because they’re expensive, but because it gives the police the physical evidence they need.”

Collazzo said it’s just phase one and he hopes many more businesses sign up for the program. “These are little tools we can do to help make everyone feel a little better where they are.”
