Florida has the fourth largest technology industry in the country behind Texas, the second largest number of net new technology jobs and more than 446,000 people working there.
The goal is for Florida to become a top 3 state in technology jobs with 1.62 million new jobs and a top 10 global economy. In the year 2030. The state ranks 39th in government research and development funding, though according to the foundation, it falls well short of the nation’s 2030 goal.
To become a top 10 economy in the world, Florida needs to move up a few places His number 15 rank. There are six pillars to focus on to grow the economy to that level quickly – talent; Innovation and Technology; infrastructure; business climate and competitiveness; Civic and governance, and quality of life.
“Right now in Florida we have over 546,000 jobs that people can’t find, but we have less than 300,000 people looking for jobs,” Wilson said. “This is a big problem.”
But there is good news.
“One of our goals was to be No. 1 in the country for new business startups by 2030,” Wilson said. “We’re right there. We’re number 1 in the country, so now we have to focus on how do we maintain that, and how do we continue to grow?
The bottom line, he said, is that Florida is already a huge tech and innovation hub.
“We have a huge brand awareness that this is not what’s happening in Florida,” Wilson said. “So we need to win what we have, but we need to get the word out to the rest of the business community.”
Among the things people generally don’t know about Florida’s tech industry is that it is home to 33,000 tech companies, and the Sunshine State will add more tech companies by 2021 than any other state, he said. In 2021, Florida is not far behind Texas as the nation’s second largest tech city in 2021, and Tampa is the No. 1 tech city in the United States, with a quarter of the state’s tech jobs located in the Tampa area.
Among the improved areas is venture capital and the aforementioned state level funding. Florida is seventh in the nation in venture capital funding, but the council would like to see that rank in the top 3.
“California gets more venture capital every 13 days than Florida does in a year,” Wilson said. “So that’s going to dive in and figure out what we can do.”
The state government is also getting into the game of enhancing and protecting information security.
