2022 US Dressage Championships
The 2022 U.S. Dressage Championship Young and Developing Horse classes began Thursday and Friday, August 25-26, 2022. The first round serves as a warm-up round to familiarize the horses with the arena and judges, while the final test will be decisive for the medals.
The 4-year-old Furst Dream, the 5-year-old Valor, the 6-year-old Møllegårdens Fashion, the 7-year-old King’s Pleasure and the developing Grand Prix horse Jane made a winning start.
4-year-olds: Adrienne Lyle and Furst Dream
The 4-year-old championship kicked off with 13 combinations riding the USEF four-year-old horse test.
Adrienne Lyle and Fürst Dream had an excellent test to win the class with a score of 9.5. Lyle (Wellington, Fla.) and Betsy Juliano, LLC’s 2018 Hanoverian stallion earned 9.5 for walk, 8.5 for walk, 9.6 for jumping and 10 for submission and overall impression. It’s been a special summer for Lyle and owner Betsy Juliano, who owns this promising stallion and also owns Lyle’s 2022 World Championship mount Salvino.
“I was extremely proud of him today,” Lyle said. “This is a big place and there’s a lot going on for a four-year-old. We have done very limited shows. He handled everything very well, he was focused and he was there with me. He just has such an incredible brain, which I really like, in addition to his talent. And he has beautiful gaits, but he really has a super brain, especially for a stallion.”
Fürst Dream was established in Germany two years ago. “We got him about a year and a half ago. We found him at two-year-old stallion auctions in Germany, bought him and then raced him lightly,” Lyle said. “I’ve always been riding young horses, that’s what I love to do. I’ve always taken them with me and tried to produce my own horse, I just haven’t done the actual young horse racing that long ago. That’s been really fun to learn more about them, and they’ve grown so much here in the U.S. The quality of these horses here now has really improved and it’s really exciting to see.”
Alice Tarjan (Oldwick, NJ) and The ice princessher 2018 Oldenburg mare earned a score of 8.94 for second place.
Michael Bragdell (Colora, Md.) and Mr. RealLeslie Waterman’s stallion Oldenburg 2018 was third with a score of 8.40.
5-year-olds: Adrienne Lyle and Valor
Fourteen combinations started the 5-year championship with the preliminary test.
Adrienne Lyle have another great ride to win the class with him bravery with the result 9.26. Lyle (Wellington, Fla.) and Kylee Lourie’s 2017 Westphalian gelding (by Vitalis x Furstenball) earned scores of 8.5 for walk and trot, 10 for jumping, 9.5 for appearance and 9.8 for overall impression.
“He was really, really phenomenal today,” Lyle said. “Honestly, I don’t think I could have asked him to do much better than what he did. He’s a lot of fun in the ring. He is so easy to help, soft to the touch, that you can sit and try to stay away from him. And it really lets you navigate all the different questions out there.”
Lindsey Holleger (Middletown, NY) and Princely beauty MWJennifer Vanover’s stallion Oldenburg 2017 (by Furstenball x Sir Donnerhall), placed second with a score of 8.96.
Rebecca Rigdon (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) and MSJ For VipsLauren Fischer’s 2017 Oldenburg gelding (by Foundation x Vivaldi), finished third with a score of 8.68.
6 year olds: Møllegårdens Fashion
Fourteen combinations in the 6-year pre-test.
Cesar Parra and Moda Møllegårdens, his 2016 Danish Warmblood gelding and Marcella Parra by Florenz x L’Espoir, impressed the judges to win the FEI Six-Vear-Old preliminary test. After finishing third in last year’s five-year championship, Møllegårdens Fashion demonstrated its development last year with Parra (Whitehouse Station, NJ) on the bars to earn a score of 8.42.
“He is very strong, but I think he is a horse built for the Grand Prix”, Parra told “Fashi”. “He has amazing hind legs. He’s very good in touch, he’s very honest and he’s very powerful.”
Rebecca Rigdon (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) and Lionel VELauren Fisher’s 2016 KWPN gelding by Negro x Tenerife was second with a score of 8.24.
Alice Tarjan (Oldwick, NJ) and recurHer 2016 Danish Warmblood mare by Grand Galaxy Win x Don Schufro, was third with a score of 7.94.
7-year-olds: Ots and King’s Pleasure
Fifteen combinations advanced to the first of two tests at the Markel/USEF Seven-Year-Old Dressage National Championships.
Endel Ots and The King’s pleasure won the Preliminary Test in the first step towards winning the inaugural championship. Ots (Wellington, Fla.) and Heidi Humphries’ 2015 KWPN stallion (by Dark Pleasure x Johnson) earned a score of 7.85.
“It was really good. I gave him more gas in that ring than I did in the warm-up, just saving him a little bit and then I really wanted to go and show everybody what a great mover he is,” Ots said. “He’s a horse honestly, really with you. Being a stallion, he’s a puppy dog. You can have a five-year-old leading him, but then he fights for you in the ring in a very beautiful way.”
Ots praised the owner for his support along the way, “I’ve had him for a year. The owner is Heidi Humphries of Zen Elite Equestrian, who I ride for. She had bought him as a five-year-old, coming up on six. And she is such a wonderful owner because she wanted me to do the six year old [division] last year. I really wanted to, but I said, ‘You know, it’s just not ready yet. If you can trust me and just give it some time. I really think the sevens will be a good plan for him.’ It has been a dream. Honestly, everything I’ve asked her to do for the horse, she’s done.”
Amanda Perkowski (Wellington, Fla.) and Sonata MF, Next Level Performance Center Inc.’s 2015 Hanoverian mare. by Sir Donnerhall x Don Principe, were second with a score of 7.58. The mare is a full sister to Serenade MF, who runs the US Grand Prix Championship at the same venue this week.
Olivia LaGoy-Weltz (Haymarket, Va.) and Fade to blackMary Anne McPhail’s 2015 Hanoverian mare by Fantastic x St. Moritz, finished third with a score of 7.51.

Grand Prix Horse Development: Alice Tarjan and Jane
Nine combinations competed in the first of two tests in the development of the Grand Prix Horse Championship.
Alice Tarjan and Jane won Intermediate II Test in a gifted class. Tarjan (Oldwick, NJ) and her 2014 KWPN mare (by Desperado x Metall) had a solid performance to earn a score of 71.813%.
“I am very pleased with the horse,” said Tarjan. “We have two and those. Maybe it wasn’t very good, but we got the point across, which was kind of a miracle given what the heats have been like. She is really green. She is 8.”
“It’s interesting, they say some horses are good horses for the young horse program and some horses aren’t,” Alice said of Jane, who she bought as a 3-year-old. “This is a good example of a horse that I didn’t think was the best path for her, so she really hasn’t been shown at all until this year. She’s 8 years old doing I-2. It’s the first overseas show she’s ever been in. I showed her a little bit down in Florida, she did the star of the future challenge and the goal is to do the grand prix in development this year, so the horse just really needs exposure in the ring and experience.”
Claire Darnell (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) and Harold SHer 2012 KWPN by Vivaldi x Fidermark, were second with a score of 70.980%.
Marcus Orlob (Annandale, NJ) and Spirit of JoyJeanette Pinard’s 2014 Westphalian Gelding by Sir Calypso x Sandro Bedo, were third with a score of 69.166%.
