NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University football will host Virginia Tech on Friday, September 2 in the 2022 season opener at SB Ballard Stadium at Cornblau Field.

• For the first time in program history, Old Dominion will open the season at home against a Power Five team. ODU hosts Virginia Tech on ESPNU.
• ODU opens season against Power Five opponent. The Kings opened last year at Wake Forest, also on Friday.
• ODU went 6-7 last season, winning its final five games of the regular season to qualify for the Myrtle Beach Bowl. ODU has won five-straight by an average score of 36-22.
• ODU and North Texas both started 1-6 last year. They join a 2016 Miami (Ohio) team that started 0-6 as the only teams since 1936 (AP Poll era) to go 1-6 or worse in a season.
• This will be Virginia Tech’s second visit to Norfolk and the first visit to the new Cornblau Field at SB Ballard Stadium. In 2018, Old Dominion beat No. 13 Virginia Tech 49-35. Quarterback Blake LaRussa passed for 495 yards and four touchdowns in the Monarch victory.
• ODU is 1-2 all-time against Virginia Tech. In the year In 2017 and 2019, the Monarchs lost to Biscburg and won in 2018 to Norfolk.
• ODU is 1-12 all-time against Power Five opponents and 1-2 at home against the Power Five with one win coming against Virginia Tech.

This is the fourth meeting between the two arch-rivals. The home team has won all three contests and Virginia Tech leads the series 2-1. In the year In 2018, Blake LaRussa threw for 495 yards and four touchdowns in the Monarchs’ win over the ODU Hokies 49-35.
