Describing the campaign and the action taken, Meta wrote: “39 Facebook accounts, 16 pages and two groups, as well as 26 Instagram accounts, were removed for violating the platform’s policy on coordinated inauthentic behavior.” This network originates from America.
“It included a number of fake accounts on our platforms, some of which were detected and disabled by our automated systems before we could investigate. Most of the posts from this operation had little to no engagement from the right communities,” Meta said in the report.
According to Meta’s statements, some accounts criticize Iran while talking about women’s rights, while others pretend to be independent news outlets and take content from various websites. To avoid this, various social media applications like Twitter, Instagram, Telegram etc. “The people behind this operation tried to hide their identity and coordination, but our investigation revealed that they were connected to individuals with links to the US military,” the report said.
The Washington Post previously reported that the Pentagon conducted a “clear audit” of how the U.S. military conducted secret information warfare after receiving reports of such an operation.
