New Mexico Tech welcomes parents, families

New Mexico Tech has launched a series of initiatives aimed at providing better communication, information and resources to student parents and families. A new section of Tech’s website is now a portal for parents and families to quickly and easily find the information they need about campus activities and programs. A recently launched email newsletter seeks to provide parents and families with links to information and a heads up about academic deadlines. And, for the first time, Tech will host weekend events for parents and families to get to know the campus and Socorro community better.

The new Dean of Students, Jennifer Chapman, likes to meet frequently with both students and their parents so that students are aware of resources to help them succeed in their academic careers. She often deals with academic issues, conduct issues, health and safety issues, and student and family emergencies.

“My role is to be an advocate for our students and their families,” she said. “I will try to follow up in time when they contact me.” The newspaper, she says, is an extension of her service as dean of students, serving as a bridge between the university and students and families.

The Mine Parents and Families website is designed as a portal so parents and family members don’t have to search the Tech website to find the information they need about campus resources, academic offerings and events.

A monthly email newsletter has been sent to the first group of recently registered parents. The NMT MinSocorroFesters Parents and Families Newsletter, launched by the Office of Student Life, shared a link to the newly created website for parents and families and information about the upcoming Parent and Family Weekend. Plans call for adding information from NMT Dining, Career

Services, Counseling Center and City of Socorro links and events. Parents and family members can subscribe to the newsletter online through a Google Form.

As part of its outreach efforts, Tech’s Student Life department is hosting a Parent and Family Weekend from September 16 to 18, aimed at giving families of new and returning students an opportunity to visit their fellow students and experience campus and community life. In addition to the annual president’s golf tournament and other events on campus that weekend, the city is hosting Socorro Fest, which gives families a chance to get to know Tech’s host community through cultural, social and athletic activities. More information and registration for the schedule of events is online.
