Newnan takes care of business.

The Newnan Lady Cougars meant business Wednesday night in the first round of the state high school volleyball tournament.

In front of a large and loud home crowd at Max Bass Gymnasium, Newnan swept Woodstock in straight sets to advance to the second round.

The final scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-20.

It was their 33rd win of the season and 15th in a row.

Matty Lovett once again provided the power in the front row. She had 18 kills in the match and finished with wins in both the first and second matches. She owns the front row and intimidates the opposition with laser-like speed and agility.

The game ended with Kelly James serving

Remarkably, only eight of the 42 matches lasted more than two sets. Head coach Precious White said after the game, “We changed a couple of things around, and we matched up. Overall, we were good in sets one and two, we had to figure out how to fire on all cylinders in the third set.

The Lady Cougars return home on Saturday when they host the North Forsyth Lady Raiders (40-7). The Lady Raiders were the regular season champions in Region 8-6A, but were upset by Jackson County in the regional tournament to take the No. 2 seed.

It will be a rematch from the 2017 season when the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Raiders in five sets, including a 15-10 fifth set that cemented the Cougars’ victory.

North Forsyth finished fifth in the final regular season, while Newnan finished seventh.
