Plates – No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball (6-0) blew out No. 10 BYU (5-2) for the fourth time (25-20, 25-21, 25-14) against its first top-10 opponent of the year on Thursday night at O’Keeffe Gymnasium. After two slow starts in the first couple of sets, the Yellow Jackets outscored the Cougars by double digits in the final set.
Tech’s second-place win in dominant fashion now marks back-to-back years of multiple wins in a single season. The Jackets had previously failed to make the playoffs since 2003. The top-10 win is Tech’s first in the regular season. Tech’s first top-10 regular season win came in 2003 against No. 5 Nebraska.
The undefeated White and Gold BYU was nearly dominant across the board, leading in kills (42-32), hitting percentage (.292-.181), assists (35-28), aces (8-3) and digs (37-30).
Top outside shooter Julia Bergman Her third 20+ kills of the season, leading the Jackets with 20 at a .400 clip, eight digs, two blocks and two aces. With this, she killed 1,305 killers.
Junior outside killer Tamara Otten He followed up with a double-double as well with eight kills and nine digs, while the junior set Bella D’Amico He assisted the attack with 25 shots.
How did it happen?
BYU came out of the gates firing, taking a 7-3 lead into the first inning. Georgia Tech bounced back from there, taking five points out of six to get even with 11 points. The Jackets broke away with four points to take a 15-12 lead, but the Cougars rallied to tie things up at 17 apiece. Tech scored five straight points to take a 22-17 lead and one more run for the white and gold to put the set out of reach. None other than Bergman as she scored the last hit to give Georgia Tech a 25-20 first win.
The second set mirrored the first as BYU slipped ahead once, 7-4. The Jackets bounced back steadily until a three-point run tied the score at 12-all. Tech strung together points when needed again, reeling off five straight to take a 20-15 advantage from the score line. Already holding a pair of points in the recent run, Bergman scored a second set kill for the Jackets to give Tech a 25-21 victory in set two.
Georgia Tech carried the momentum into the third set, hitting the first six points of the second. Bianca Bertolino He pointed three aces during the race. BYU fell as the white and gold flew, winning eight straight points to go ahead 17-4. The Cougars had to make one last effort with a few kills of their own at match point, but the Yellow Jackets ended the third set on top to win the set 25-14 and sweep the match.
