Houghton, Mich Michigan Tech men’s tennis will send six players to the ITA Midwest Regional tournament starting Saturday, Sept. 17 at the University of Indianapolis. The individual tournament with players in the second division of the region consists of singles and doubles matches. Sites include Center Grove High School, Center Grove Middle School North and Clark-Pleasant Middle School. Games released on Wednesday.
“It will be interesting to see how we do in the tournament this year,” said head coach Christine Yep. “It’s been a very positive atmosphere at practice this season and everyone is working hard every day. Sophomore Adam Fenjiro (Rabat, Morocco) is among Tech’s student-athletes. Fenjiro played No. 1 singles as a true freshman, collecting his first career win at the position and appearing in six doubles matches during the spring.
Vitor Jordao (Recife, Brazil) returns after playing 11 singles matches at No. 2. He split time with Fenjiro and junior Eli Pino (St. Clair, Michigan).
Ricardo Nunez (Ciudad, del Carmen, Mexico), Amberish Rao (Irvine, California) and Nikolai Proszhannikov (Santiago, Chile) return to compete as juniors, while Leon Sell (Nuemberg, Germany) begins his season at MTU as a junior. all right. Shell’s brother, Patrick, was a collegiate tennis player.
Depth and injuries have hampered the Huskies over the past three seasons, but this year’s team, which has eight members, appears to be headed in the right direction after going 4-3 in late spring and placing No. 1 over No. 30 Davenport. They play the GLIAC.
The ITA tournament consists of A, B and C singles and doubles. Jordao will play Samuel Contestable (Quincy) in A Singles on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The winner will likely face the region’s No. 1 seed, Dom Spicer (Wayne State). Spicer helped the Warriors to a national runner-up finish.
After Prosjannikov played No. 3 singles for Tech last season, Michael Gurtner (Tiffin) took over at singles. Fenjiro Alfredo Berlanga (Findlay) made his B Singles title debut against Oliver Wirzbicki (Lewis), who transferred from Division 1 Middle Tennessee State. Rao and Nunez are at C singles with Nunez seeded second.
Doubles pairings include Jordao and Sale (A), Fenjiro and Prosjannikov (B) and Nunez and Rao (C). Tech has a second chance to reverse the dual when Ashland University hosts the dual on Sept. 30. The team’s first regular season game is Feb. 1 against Tiffin.
