LUBBOCK, Texas (KSBD) – Lubbock and the surrounding area produce 40 percent of the nation’s cotton production. Lubbock is now home to the second largest cotton sorting facility in the world. It is the first of its kind, a class complex on a university campus.
The equipment in the facility can process up to 50,000 units of fiber per day, focusing on the level of products that are issued to consumers. USDA Administrator Daryl Ernst said Texas Tech was the perfect university to partner with.
“It will lead the way for us to do bigger and better things in other areas. Good things will come from our partnerships in research, education and work,” Ernst said.
The complex focuses on providing Texas Tech agricultural students with the opportunity to study cotton from harvesting to production. The technology allows manufacturers to provide an accurate grade on cotton fibers.
