Preview: Michigan Tech opens GLIAC Play on the road








Houghton, Mich – The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team opens conference play on the road this weekend. The Huskies have a tilt against Purdue Northwest on Friday, set for a 2 p.m. The Black and Gold will then head to Kenosha, Wisconsin, for Sunday’s show at Parkside at 1 p.m.

Fans can catch both games on FloSports as part of a four-year media partnership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference that began this fall.

About pride

Purdue Northwest holds a 0-3-1 record heading into GLIAC play. Last time out, the Pride fell to Drury 2-0 at Dowling Park on Friday (Sept. 2), ending in a 0-0 tie, before traveling to Illinois-Springfield on Tuesday (Sept. 6).

Kaci Pampreen scored the lone goal for Purdue Northwest this season, in a 2-1 loss against Lake Erie on Aug. 28.

About Rangers

Parkside enters the conference portion of their schedule with a 3-1 start since 2014. Most recently, the Rangers hosted NSIC foes Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State. Friday’s clash with CSP saw Parkside win 2-0. The Rangers boasted another win on Sunday when Alexis Bolger scored the game-winner in the 10th minute of the first half.

Chloe Groeters earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after helping the Rangers on the backline, playing 174 of 180 minutes in a shutout game against Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State.

Parkside faces Northern Michigan at noon before seeing the Huskies on Sunday.

About Huskies

Michigan Tech enters the season with a 2-2 record in conference play. Most recently, the Huskies split weekend home contests. Friday night (September 2), MTU beat Minnesota Crookston 1-0, Kiersen Korienek came off the bench to score the game winner. On Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4), the Huskies welcomed No. 9 Bemidji State to Kerley Stadium, falling just short of victory when the Beavers scored their only goal in the 20th minute of the first half.

Senior goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde recorded her second shutout of the season and sixth of her career in Minnesota’s 1-0 win over Crookston on Friday.

In Sunday’s game against No. 9 Bemidji State, the Huskies forced the Beaver goalie into 10 saves. The black and gold held advantages in shots (26-5), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (10-2).

One last thing

The Huskies have been a pest to opposing defenses this season. The Black and Gold is ranked 13th in the country in games played. Julia Pitila leads MTU with an average of 2.75 shots per game, good for fifth among the GLIAC.
