Q&A: A new business school dean uses past experience


On May 26, 2022, Michael Johnson-Kramer of New Dean Ithaca College’s School of Business and will launch its new location on July 1, 2022..

Before coming to Ithaca College, Johnson –Kramer was a professor of management at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts. In addition, as dof b2019–20 to benefit the McCallum Graduate School of Business at Bentley University.

Staff Secretary JD Davis spoke. Johnson –Kramer talks about what he hopes to achieve as dean of Ithaca College’s business school and how his past leadership experiences have prepared him for his role.

Jadin DavisHow does it feel to be named dean of Ithaca College’s business school?

Michael Johnson-Kramer: It’s very exciting. I have long admired Ithaca College, and I especially admire the faculty…you look at them from a distance and you see how involved they are with the students. I spent 14 years at a very similar institution, very student-centered, and coming to Ithaca was like coming home to a place where students are the reason to get up in the morning.

JD: What first attracted you to Ithaca College?

MC: Its student-centeredness and culture of interaction with students. Another part that attracted me here is the history and background of the college… [There’s] A truly rich learning environment to be a part of and a dean, And that’s what I appreciate and what a great part., As I understand it, They are the basic principles behind it. noIt resonates with my sense of how students and teachers learn together.

JD: How do you think your past experiences in multiple leadership roles will help you as a dean?

MC: I have extensive past experience as a faculty member, from leading curriculum review to serving in the dean’s office at two different institutions. So I have a little bit of distributed experience that I think will serve me well because of some of the things that we get at the college level. I hope to be a good voice in some of the conversations and support them in their vision for the college. … It’s important to think about how the dean can be part of the educational conversation and support individual teachers and counselors and engage with students who come from that little school experience.

JD: What do you think you will bring to a business school as a dean?

MC: One of my central interests is interdisciplinarity. It’s about breaking down silos in business. I think my passion for interdisciplinarity tells me that those business problems that private, for-profit companies struggle with can benefit from health or wellness insights. health care Policy could benefit from a little more creativity or an appreciation of how people are different and cultures.

JD: How do you become an advocate for students at school?

MC: [Ithaca College] Students seem to be the most powerful advocates for themselves. Student leaders are finding their voice.,bAll I can do is work with students and teachers to create a great learning community. The main part will be listening [from] and participatory [with] Students. The best way I can advocate for students is to provide them with a platform, formal and informal channels to advocate for themselves. I can’t wait to see what we come up with together.
