Vermont Business Magazine The SBA’s Vermont District Office is accepting nominations for the 2023 Small Business Awards. Previous Vermont winners include Ben & Jerry’s, Mama’s and Black Hill Preserves.
The annual awards recognize the achievements of SBA-supported small businesses and their contributions to their communities and Vermont’s economy.
To be nominated and receive one of the following local awards, a small business candidate must match the award category, demonstrate business success, and complete and submit the required nomination package information.
The categories are as follows.
Small Business Person of the Year Eligibility: Individuals or partners with a small business that has increased sales, profits and employees and has been in business for three years. A business should get the help of the Small Business Administration.
Small business export of the year Eligibility: A small business that has grown sales, profits and/or employees through exporting and has been in business for three years.
Family-Small Business of the Year Qualifications: The small business must have been family owned for at least 15 years and ownership has been passed down to another generation.
Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year Qualifications: The small business is at least 51 percent owned by a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces and has been in business for three years.
Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year Qualifications: A small business at least 51% female-owned, which has been in business for three years.
Small Ownership Small Business of the Year Qualifications: A small business that is at least 51% minority-owned, and has been in business for three years.
The best young entrepreneur of the year Eligibility: Individuals or partners who own a small business, are under 30 years of age and have been in business for three years.
Microenterprise of the year Eligibility: An individual or partnership who owns a microenterprise with five or fewer employees, has received an SBA grant and has been in business for three years.
To nominate a Vermont small business, email the name of the business along with the owner’s name and specific award category to daniel.monahan@sba.gov. The SBA’s Vermont District Office oversees the business. Businesses can appoint themselves

The Small Business Administration is hosting a free webinar on Sept. 7 at noon about guaranteed loan programs.
The SBA guarantees loans to small businesses so that they can easily access the money, reducing the risk of the lender. Funds can be used for most business purposes, including long-term fixed assets and working capital. The amount ranges from 500 to 5.5 million dollars.
