YARMOUTH – What do a financial planning firm, a media publication and a training and education center have in common?
The two businesses and one non-profit were recently recognized for overall excellence by SCORE Cape Code and the Islands in 2022.
SCORE (Service of Retired Executives) is a national non-profit organization whose members provide counseling, consultation and advice to business owners. SCORE Cape Cod and Islands has been helping local businesses for 29 years.
According to SCORE consultant Mark Goldberg, more than 50 volunteer consultants have worked with more than 900 businesses this year alone. SCORE’s Cape Chapter, in partnership with Chambers of Commerce, offers workshops hosted by Coastal Community Capital through a grant from the Cape Cod 5 Foundation.

What is unique about these three businesses
Beacon Financial Planning Inc., Cape & Plymouth Business Media, and Martha’s Vineyard Center for Education and Training are this year’s SCORE winners. Beacon has been named a 2022 Small Business of the Year. Cape & Plymouth Business Media was named Small Business Champion, and Martha’s Vineyard Center was named Nonprofit of the Year.
The awards are a way to let the community know that small businesses matter, Goldberg said.
“Society should value their small businesses, especially those that survive in the first three to five years,” he said. “They employ workers. They’re profitable. And they’re contributing to the community, not just as a business, but as part of the community.”
There are 33.2 million small businesses in the United States, according to the Small Business Administration. The administration defines small businesses as organizations with fewer than 500 employees. They comprise more than 99 percent of American businesses and have accounted for 65 percent of new job creation since 2000.

According to the Cape Cod Commission’s 2020 report, the Cape and Islands have 8,679 small businesses. Michaela Herlihay, president and CCO of Beacon Financial Planning, considers small businesses the backbone of Cape Cod.
Anytime someone sponsors a Little League jersey or donates to anything in the community, she said, it’s mostly small businesses. “Small businesses care about the community, but the community cares a lot in return.” As for the small business, they take the idea of shopping locally as a mutually beneficial relationship.
Hurley called the award a way for her firm to be recognized as an all-female owned and operated financial planning firm in a traditionally male-dominated environment. And the fact that the award highlights the business, not the individual, is a testament to the strong teamwork that Beacon offers, she said.
The three SCORE winners joined 17 other Cape businesses at a breakfast ceremony on October 26 that recognized their overall business excellence.

Small businesses have a role in society
Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce board member Warren Rutherford said it’s important to recognize those who excel and excel in their business and service to the community.
There are about 350 businesses in the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, said President and CEO Marty Brummel. Members nominate other members based on good business practices, innovation, growth, management philosophy, response to industry problems and community involvement.

The Board of Directors will review the nominations and vote for the businesses they deem most deserving. The selection process follows the same guidelines as other Cape Cod Chambers of Commerce.
The Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce recently recognized businesses of the year for community service, citizenship and businesses of the year based on their number of employees.
Hyannis’ unsung hero
The Hyannis Chamber’s Unsung Hero Award was presented posthumously to George (Skip) Simpson III for his long history of business ownership and community service in Hyannis.
Simpson died on August 6. He and his wife, Lisa, were third-generation owners of the Anchor Inn in Hyannis. He was a member of the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, and served as president in 2008. He was on the Hyannis Water Board from 2007-2013, and was a member of the West Barnstable Civic Association.
Felice Barrero, owner of Alberto Ristorante, received the John F. Kennedy Jr. Community Service Award. The award recognizes a business owner’s exemplary community service. Barrero has been part of the Hyannis fabric since 1980. In 1984, he bought Alberto’s Restaurant and moved it to Main Street.
Barreiro has a long history of giving back to the community by supporting local organizations with gift certificates and holding discounted activities.
Christopher Joyce, president of Joyce Landscaping, accepted the Patrick Butler Citizen of the Year Award. In the year Established in 1977, the award recognizes an individual who has made a voluntary and recognized contribution to the business community.

Joyce has worked with Barnstable’s youth soccer program for 20 years. He is a past president of the Cape Cod Landscape Association, a past member of the Barnstable School Committee, which he chaired for two years. His company’s philanthropic work includes funding for Cape Cod Children’s Meals.
The landscape company is a major employer on the Cape. It has 120 full-time employees and another 80 seasonal employees, Joyce said.
The Hyannis Chamber recognized two businesses for Business of the Year. Chez Antoine, an 850-square-foot patisserie serving delicacies from France and Belgium, was named Business of the Year under 25.
Horgan Insurance gave the honor to small businesses with more than 25 employees. The family-owned independent agency has been on the Cape since 1945.
Small Business Excellence Awards are presented by other Cape and Islands Chambers of Commerce. Awards were presented to Emerald Hollow Therapeutic Riding Center in Brewster; If the show fits in Chatham; At the start of the Glen Cover Hotel and Restaurant; Chatelain Real Estate in Dennis; Eastham ACE Hardware in Eastham; Howlingbird Studios in Falmouth; Sandcastle Doggie Playcare in Harwich; Stephanie Wolf Designs on Martha’s Vineyard; Steeple Street Music Academy in Mashpee; Pip & anchor in Nantucket; Barley’s Neck in Orleans; Provincetown Brewing Company in Provincetown, Dunbar House Tea Room and Wine Bar in Sandwich; Up Front clothing and gift boutique in Wellfleet; and JoMama’s NY Bagels and Coffeehouse in Yarmouth. Candy Corner was awarded the Small Business Excellence Award by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.
