Sean Shipman led St. Thomas past Michigan Tech 32-6 in the home opener.


Sean Shipman ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns to lead St. Thomas to a 32-6 conference win over visiting Michigan Tech on Saturday.

Shipman, a Champlin Park sophomore, scored on 1-yard runs in the first and second quarters as the Tommies built a 26-3 halftime lead.

The Tommies outscored the Huskies 20-0 in the second quarter. In addition to Shipman’s first touchdown, Cade Sexauer completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Andrew McElroy and the Tommies returned a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown.

Colby Gartner scored on an 11-yard run in the third quarter to cap the Tommies’ scoring.

The Tommies’ defense limited the Huskies to 150 yards of offense and 11 first downs.

The Tommies (1-1) opened their second straight FCS (I-AA) season with a 44-13 loss at Southern Utah on Sept. 1 and will play host to Lincoln (Calif.) next Saturday.

Augustana 30, Bemidji State 29: The host Vikings withstood a fourth quarter comeback by the Beavers to capture the win in Sioux Falls, SD Augustana took a 30-16 lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Beavers scored twice in the final four minutes to pull within one point with 1 minute, 20 seconds remaining. The Beavers’ two-point conversion pass failed.

Southwest Minnesota St. 14, Concordia (St. Paul) 6: The Mustangs got their first home win since 2018, with the defense forcing three turnovers and Jesse Sherwood rushing for a career-high 196 yards on 32 carries. It was the first win for first-year head coach Scott Underwood.

MSU Moorhead 24, Upper Iowa 21: Tommy Falk passed for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Dragons past the host Peacocks in Fayette, Iowa. Both of Falk’s touchdown passes came in the first half as the Dragons took a 24-14 halftime lead. The Peacocks led 14-7 after the first quarter.

Winona State 25, Mary 17: Ty Gavin rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown to help the host Warriors pull past the Marauders. The Marauders led 14-0 late in the first quarter before Gavin scored on a 22-yard TD run.

Upper Midwest

St. John’s 37, Wisconsin-River Falls 34: Group 3’s 4th-ranked host Johnnie ended the tournament by leading the 19th-ranked Falcons with 18 points to spare with eight minutes remaining. The Falcons scored two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes, 30 seconds — to Caleb Blaha — to pull within three in 20 seconds. The Johnnies recover an offside kick. Troy Fedema rushed for two touchdowns and Aaron Syverson threw two touchdown passes for the Johnnies.

43 North Dakota St., no. Carolina A&T 3: Dawson Weber returned the host Bison 79 yards for a touchdown and scored 21 points to lead the Aggies. The Bison (2-0) play at Arizona next Saturday.

Wis.-Platteville 10, Bethel 7: The host Pioneers, who led 10-0 at halftime, outlasted the 11th-ranked Royals in Division 3 for the nonconference victory.

Carlton 84, Crown 20. Jonathan Singleton passed for 287 yards and three touchdowns to lead the host Knights to a season-opening win at Northfield. The Cavaliers, who led 56-14 at halftime, had 685 yards of offense.

Hamlin 34, Minn-Morris 21. Alejandro Villanueva passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and Nicolas Rocafort ran for 112 yards to lead the Pipers over the Cougars. Hamlin’s defense forced four turnovers by the Cougars.

St. Olaf 55, Luther 27. Theo Duran passed for 291 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Owls past the Norse in Northfield. Jordan Embry rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns for the Oles.
