Tesla ATV recalled for violation of safety requirements for children

Tesla’s CyberQuads for kids, made by RadioFlyer, have been recalled because they don’t meet federal safety standards. Owners are getting a full refund after decommissioning the all-electric vehicle.

Intended as a toy, the RadioFlyer CyberQuad is designed for kids and riders eight and up. It was filmed after Tesla showed off a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle at the Cybertruck unveiling event in November 2019. The $1,900 “toy” version went on sale in December 2021 and sold out quickly. The toy is designed to go as fast as 10 miles per hour.

Although developed by Radio Flyer, an exclusive licensee for Tesla-themed ride-on toys, the CyberQuad for Kids was only available on Tesla’s website. About 5,000 of these were sold.

The issue, according to the CPSC and Radio Flyer, is that the CyberQuad meets the legal definition of a “youth ATV.” That means it has to meet certain safety requirements, such as mechanical suspension and high tire pressure. Also, companies that sell ATVs are required to provide safety training and information.

According to CPSC and Radio Flyer, the Radio Flyer version does not meet these requirements. “These ATV safety requirements are designed to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, prevent serious injury or death,” the CPSC said in the announcement.

Tesla, which generally does not respond to media inquiries, did not respond to a request for comment on Saturday morning.

“We take the safety of children very seriously,” Radio Flyer said on its website. “Radio Flyer has worked closely with the CPSC on a voluntary recall of CyberQuad for children”.

Owners are being asked to remove the ATV’s engine controller – the computer that controls the batteries that run to the electric motor – and send it to Radio Flyer. Disable the product permanently. Owners will then receive a full refund of the ATV’s $1,900 purchase price.

The remainder of CyberQuad may be disposed of in accordance with local laws for children. Radio Flyer offers a surcharge of up to $50 to cover removal costs. Owners can, however, keep the disabled product if they wish.

The RadioFlyer website has an online form that owners can fill out to request return postage for the motor controller.
