Texas A&M University’s Mays School of Business will hold an expansion ceremony in the new Business Education Complex (BEC) on Friday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. The ceremony will include a short program by Texas A&M Foundation President Tyson Voelkel. ’96 President of Texas A&M University. Catherine Banks, recently retired Abrigo President and CEO Wayne Roberts ’85, Texas A&M Student Body President Case Harris ’22 and May Interim Dean Ricky Griffin will feature.
The foundation of the complex — extending Mays’ footprint beyond the Wiener Building and Cox Hall to a new, modern building and inviting outdoor space — is a key milestone in the school’s quest to become the nation’s premier public school. Slated for occupancy in the spring semester of 2025, the new building design extends and reinforces Mays’ commitment to being a vibrant learning institution. “The new building is designed for the 21st century and advanced learning models,” said Roberts, who gave $7.5 million to the new building’s lead donor. “It’s going to be architecturally and architecturally beautiful, and it’s going to be an integral part of the campus.”
Jerry Cox ’72, president and chairman of Cox & Perkin Exploration, who pledged a $5 million gift to the new building, said, “To get the first designation, we have to have the best students, the best teachers, the best leadership.” Best facilities. The complex will be the center of activity on the Texas A&M West Campus. The new building’s design encourages interaction, creativity and knowledge generation through the use of a variety of dynamic spaces, including a large atrium, café, and collaboration and hug spaces. In addition, the complex’s Collaborative Plaza offers outdoor seating, giving Aggies and visitors a place to relax, socialize or study.
The new building will house high-powered, flexible learning studios with the latest technology, allowing teachers to create engaging learning experiences in team and blended learning environments. In addition, school officials say, it will house one of May’s premier assets, the Executive Development Center, which adds to May’s commitment to lifelong learning.
Construction of the BEC expansion will be funded through a combination of funds from the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost, as well as significant private contributions from the Texas A&M Foundation.
The individual contributions include commitments from May’s broad and committed alumni, current students, faculty, staff and partners totaling more than $36 million. “This wonderful addition to the Business Education Complex would not have been possible without the steadfast support and financial investment of our donors, large and small, who believe so strongly in our mission and vision. Wayne Roberts, Jerry and Kay Cox, and the Mays family – as well as many, many others – have all stepped forward to help us on our path to excellence. “This new world-class facility will help us further showcase the amazing things we do at Mays Business School.”
When it opens, the new complex will be an integral part of the business school’s commitment to developing transformational leaders who will help advance global prosperity. Mays Family Foundation President Cathy Mays Johnson, whose daughter Lori Mays ’57 gave birth to the business school’s namesake, said, “BEC allows students to become more active learners and ultimately lifelong learners. The Mays Foundation has given $15 million to the joint BEC as lead donor. “It’s all about fostering transformational leadership, inspiring students to excel, and creating a better future for all.”
