The Virgil Abloh Award will be presented by Harlem’s Fashion Row

A new award honoring Virgil Abloh will be presented by Harlem’s Fashion Row next month as part of the kickoff festivities for NYFW.

As announced on Monday, the Virgil Abloh Prize presented by LVMH will be presented as part of the 15th anniversary of the fashion and style awards show on September 6, whose theme for 2022 is “The Past of the Future”. The award, according to a press release, was created to celebrate “like-minded individuals who embody the spirit, brilliance and vision of Virgil” in their chosen field.

Recipient of the Virgil Abloh Award presented by LVMH this year is Issa Rae, star and co-creator of HBO’s Uncertain and creator of the recently launched HBO Max series Rap Sh!t. The award will be presented by Virgil’s wife, Shannon Abloh. Earlier this year, it was announced that Shannon would be taking on the dual role of CEO and Corporate Managing Director of Virgil Abloh Securities.

Others who have been honored this year in other award categories include Janet Jackson, Sergio Hudson, Ade Samuel and Robin Givhan.

“We are moving into the future by reaching back to understand, honor and draw strength from our past,” Harlem’s Fashion Row founder Brandice Daniel said of this year’s event theme, additional details on which can be found here.

This month, Abloh’s legacy was celebrated with Mercedes-Benz sharing a behind-the-scenes video focusing on the Project MAYBACH sessions.

“We are honored to have worked with a creative genius and inspired by his ideas and attitude,” said a representative of the German luxury car brand when sharing the footage.
