Since the Virginia Tech Hokies named Brent Prine their football coach in December, how many times have you heard Prine find himself a perfect cultural fit in Blacksburg? Believe it no matter how many times you hear it.
The latest example of Pry being deemed a perfect fit occurred this week when it was announced that the Hokies would be bringing in the “lunch pail” in 2022.
Not known? Well, maybe you’ve never seen a Virginia Tech football game. The lunch pail tradition was left when defensive coordinator Bud Foster retired at the end of the 2020 season.
Defensive line coach Pry, who spent three seasons under Foster as a graduate assistant with the Hokies in the mid-1990s, understands Virginia Tech’s traditions, especially the lunch pile.
On Tuesday, Prem spoke to the media and discussed returning the lunch box.
“It’s been a big thing for me over the years,” Pry told hokiesports.com.
“It’s part of the fabric of this place. In my mind, it’s something that started defensively. His main residence is on the defensive side of the ball, but I want that mentality for our entire football team. By doing this, it becomes completely part of us. We did the same thing, not necessarily with the lunch pail, but we carried that reference and what it meant in other ways. Over the course of my career, on the defensive end of the ball, so he naturally made his way back.
The Hokies open Friday night in Norfolk against the ODU Monarchs. Pree and the Hokies take on the lunch bowl Saturday, Sept. 10, in their home opener against the Boston College Eagles.
