What Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire wears in a week

[ad_1]

Welcome to us Style diaries, a series where we explore the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We’re asking friends and tastemakers to tell us what they *really* wore during the week and give a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week we follow Caroline Maguirethe fashion director at STORE as she prepares for fall — it’s back to school for the kids and fashion week for her. As someone who catalogs trends for a living, Maguire likes to test those statement pieces in her wardrobe, toning them down with lightweight pieces like denim and classic tanks.

“This is an easy look to pull off in the morning. It is bright; it’s an oversized sweater. The sweater is from AGR, which is based in London, and is brand new to Shopbop. Knitting is very new; it’s really in line with my aesthetic. And then it’s back to really light shorts. These are from Denimist, which is R13’s sister line. I like that they have this acid tone. For shoes, these Marni slides are [also] super easy. I’m rushing out the door, always losing track of time. These slides are knitted, so they are very comfortable – you are in and out. For the bag, [I wanted] something fun. It’s JW Anderson.”

“This is [what I wear] to have a coffee with a friend, just catching up, weekend brunch. This bag is amazing. The braided detail is everything. It can hold everything, seriously – coffee, wipes, hand sanitizer, pajamas, whatever you need. It is the perfect land. And if you’re a mom, it is of bag to have. I love this Sea New York crochet sweater with Khaite’s ‘Kerrie’ jeans. If you like denim, you HAVE to buy these jeans. I size up because I don’t like skin tightening. I am obsessed with this couple. Next, I kept it more neutral with lace-up sandals. The sunglasses are Isabel Marant. I really like the light tint of the lenses.”

“This is [what I wear during] Fashion week—trading, meeting designers, looking at new brands with my buyers. The blazer is Lioness. The minivan is the Monse we all know and love. I am memorizing this part. I paired these Alexander Wang loafers, which are super fun, with pant socks. The bag is too big. It’s a small box bag from Acne Studios. Goes with many outfits. Then the tank is just a neutral tank, stocked by WSLY, which I layered with some personal charms and a twisted chain.”

“This outfit is my go-to outfit when I come home from a busy day at work and need to go get tea or wine with one of my girlfriends. Of course, I’m really into western boots right now; these are from Isabel Marant. This shade is a nice dark oxblood idea that is really fun. I paired them with these denim shorts which are R13. At the top is Lug Von Siga. They are known for their peaks. I love the idea of masculine and feminine – oversized bermuda shorts with a very, very feminine top.”

“[This dress] it’s one of my favorites. It’s perfect for a summer date night because it’s crocheted. This dress is from Wales Bonner – it’s so exciting to finally have them on our site. We are all such fans [designer Grace Wales Bonner]. You can’t tell, but the rear is low. I paired it with these really comfy Stuart Weitzman sandals. The pearl detail goes very well with the dress. And then there’s that acne bag again, because it goes with everything. And then, of course, Bottega [Veneta] sunglasses-I’m obsessed with anything Bottega right now. And I love really light hoops, and these are from Luv Aj. I kept the jewelry to a minimum, because the dress is like that wow– a part of the statement. It’s so hot, so it definitely allows air to filter through because it’s crocheted.”

Notes on style:

How would you describe your sense of personal style?

“I think my personal style is definitely trend-oriented, but I like to balance that with something more relaxed and laid-back – not super tight or serious. Right now, I’m really obsessed with the idea of mixing the masculine and the feminine [pieces] together. I’m a big fan of mixing prints. Shopbop in general is such a print and dye company that is definitely up my alley. [I like to be] bold and loud with my style choices, which is fun.

Tell us about your lifestyle. What kinds of things do you need to wear regularly?

“Oh my god, my life is crazy right now. In September, we’re back in work and mom mode. So every day is really different. I tend to keep my core style DNA, obviously dressing for comfort, but having fun and being really playful with what I’m wearing. But it’s really based on what activities I’m doing for the day. For example, if it’s the weekend, I’m doing activities with the kids. I am the soccer mom I never thought I would be. So I want to make sure my outfit is super comfortable, pulled together, but not stuffy or boring. I usually wear denim shorts with a really cute t-shirt or oversized sweater. During the work week, when I’m going to the market, or in meetings with editors, I would definitely be more polished than for the weekend. I think it’s just a case-by-case, day-to-day question of what to wear.”

Do you have any pictures of a uniform?

“I think my go-to style will always be a fun new denim, whether it’s a cropped jean from R13 or Denimist or just a super high-waisted, pleated, oversized jean from Agolde or Goldsign . Any denim with a flare is my essence. And then I’ll play with it, like adding a light blouse, but I’ll stack the necklaces. Or an oversized sweater that’s bright and colorful, and lace-up sandals.”

How do you eat, sleep, breathe for your career, how does that affect how you get dressed in the morning?

“I take it to heart. My work is obviously very trend-driven, focusing on new brands, new seasonal trends, what we’re looking for in the market and new designers. We’re seeing them everywhere, from designer appointments to street style. I definitely take all of these and implement them [to my own wardrobe]. It’s inspiration for my personal style, like, ‘I’m going to try this.’ It’s out of the box.’ Then I can bring it back to Shopbop and see if it applies to our customer, because our customer is so open to innovation and different ways of wearing things.”

What trends are you really excited about this fall?

“Oh my god, there are so many. I know it’s scary to say, but the Western is back. Western boots I’m really excited about, just because I think you can do a lot with them. Wear them with a very cute miniskirt or pants, instead of making them so dressy, like a cowboy or cowgirl. Another is miniskirts. Of course, we’re still playing on the miniskirt trend from this one [Miu Miu show]. I’m definitely still excited about miniskirts. And then this idea of, we like to call it daytime drama, for fall. It’s this whole theme idea, lurex, diamonds-idea that you usually [associate] with cocktail [attire], but dressed up for the day, styling it with cool denim. Or you’re wearing a cocktail dress with Converse high tops. And jackets, we always love oversized jackets. They are fun.”

Completing the look, what is your typical hair and makeup routine?

Every day, my hair is either in a messy knot because sometimes I just can’t be bothered or it’s just loose and down. These are seriously the only looks for my hair. And then for makeup, I love makeup, but I’m really more into my skin routine these days. I think everyone is. If I could have any makeup [product] for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. I think I’ve tried every mascara out there. I use three at the moment. It’s MAC In Extreme Dimension Waterproof Mascara. That NARS is really good too, and Marc Jacobs.”
