Amazon closes 2 facilities, scrap plans for 42 new buildings Report

  • Amazon is closing two facilities in Baltimore and giving jobs to more than 300 workers elsewhere.
  • Amazon has to slow down the growth of its extensive supply chain.
  • The e-commerce giant has scrapped plans for 42 new U.S. facilities, a consulting firm told Bloomberg.

Amazon is starting to tighten its belt.

The e-commerce company announced Wednesday that it is closing two distribution centers in Baltimore that employ a total of more than 300 employees.

An Amazon spokeswoman told WMAR-2 that the company will offer other transmission sites within its sites the opportunity to relocate. The spokesman did not say how many sites there were, but said there were “several”.

The move appears to be the latest move by Amazon Dialer to expand its vast delivery network.

Consulting firm MWPVL International Inc., which tracks Amazon’s real estate acquisitions, told Bloomberg that Amazon has canceled plans to open 42 facilities in the U.S. and delayed plans to open 21 more.

The company is holding off on opening a 700,000-square-foot facility in Nebraska that will be fully constructed, which has been delayed until 2024.

Amazon’s real estate empire exploded during the pandemic, leaving the company in a surplus due to demand, Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky told reporters in April.

Olsavsky said Amazon has doubled the size of its operations and workforce from mid-2021 to April 2022.

Amazon has cut back on hiring in its retail division this year. As Insider previously reported, the division has been hit hard by high inflation.

But Amazon isn’t getting stronger in every part of its business. Insider Eugene Kim reported Friday that the company is inviting sellers to a new pilot program designed to store products longer. While Amazon has historically focused on fast-turnover stock, this new program shows it’s looking to capture a larger share of the warehouse market.

Amazon did not immediately respond to an insider’s request for comment for this article.
