Bergman Lands’ first ACC Player of the Week – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets


Greensboro, NC – Top outside shooter Julia Bergman She led No. 5 Georgia Tech volleyball 2-0 to open the season at the Ole Miss Invitational and was named the ACC Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Bergman became the first student-athlete in the conference since 2015 to receive ACC Player of the Year honors four times in a single season, earning his first ACC honor after collecting four such honors a season ago. She earned six career ACC Player of the Week honors and eight total Atlantic Coast Conference weekly honors in her first season on the Flats, earning two ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

The decorated jacket followed with 45 kills for Georgia Tech in the Ole Miss Invitational. With those numbers, she currently leads the nation in kills (6.43) and rebounds (7.21).

The outside hitter took the season by storm, hitting a career-high 33 kills, hitting .459 and chipping in defensively with eight digs and a pair of blocks to pace the Jackets over Ole Miss. The 33 kills are tied for fifth. In program history, only four former Yellow Jackets have accomplished the goal on seven separate occasions in a single game.

Bergman followed up and led Tech’s attack once against No. 19 Illinois, posting his first double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs along with a pair of blocks.

Over the weekend, the Brazilian bombers killed more than 1,200 people. The flamboyant Yellow Jackets continued to write Tech’s record books as she moved up to seventh in program history with 133 hits.

The Jackets will receive one of the first weekly ACC honors of the year after totaling 12 a season ago, leading the league for the most in program history. Georgia Tech had at least one ACC weekly award recipient in eight of the 14 weeks the conference announced winners last season.

The Jackets will make their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium by hosting the GT Invitational, taking on Dayton on Friday at 8 p.m., Arizona State on Saturday at 5 p.m. and FIU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
