Columbus, Ohio – The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes (2-3) defeated No. 10 BYU (5-3) (25-19, 25-16, 27-25) to open action at the Georgia Tech Classic.
Ohio State used an early run in the first set to take the lead for good and held off a late BYU run to win 25-19. The second set was tight early on before a 6-0 Ohio State run allowed the Buckeyes to create some distance and take a 2-0 lead in a 25-16 victory. BYU tied the third set five times in a row, but OSU held off the Cougars to sweep the third set 27-25. Ohio State did not trail during the game.
How did it happen?
Emily Londot started the game with a kill on her first try. Following a 4-0 run, Ohio State took a 6-1 lead to force a BYU timeout, including a trio of offensive errors from the Cougars. The Buckeyes extended their lead to 8-1 before BYU responded. The Cougars closed the margin to 9-5 before another 4-0 Buckeyes run ended BYU’s timeout. In a timeout, the teams traded points — aided by a successful BYU challenge. A slight 3-0 OSU run allowed the Buckeyes to double up on the Cougars, 20-10. BYU closed out the first set on a 7-2 run, but OSU took the first set by a 25-19 mark.
The Buckeyes scored first in the second set on a ball-handling error by the Cougars. BYU won the second test of the tournament by a score of 3-2 instead of 4-1. Back-to-back Buckeye points gave OSU a 7-4 lead. The Cougars got back within one at 8-7 and 9-8 before three straight points forced a BYU timeout. OSU extended its run to 6-0 to take a 15-8 lead on a service ace by Kayleigh Moore. A layup from Gabby Gonzalez and Mack Podraza pushed Ohio State’s lead to 19-12 and forced a Cougars timeout. The Buckeyes went on a 22-12 run with five unanswered points. Londot won 25-16 with her sixth kill of the game.
Londot again started the set with kills as the Buckeyes jumped out to the first four points. BYU scored the next three to pull within one, but behind-the-back OSU points gave the Buckeyes a slight cushion. A service ace from Rylee Rader gave Ohio State an 11-6 advantage and forced a BYU timeout. Out of a timeout, the Cougars scored the next three points to pull within two at 11-9 and 13-12. Back kills from Genesia Moore forced a Cougars timeout as the Buckeyes led 16-12. BYU tied the set at 17, the first tie since the score was 1-1 early in the second set. The Buckeyes got a narrow lead, but back-to-back BYU points tied the game at 21 again. With the teams gaining advantage each time Ohio State traded points, but the Cougars set 22, 23, 24 and 25 to tie before one. A kill from Gonzalez and a solo block from Adria Powell capped the sweep.
