Business as usual – Excellence in Tulsa area schools in Division 6AI

[ad_1]

In 20 Class 6AI football games against Tulsa-area teams and OKC-area teams this season, Tulsa has won 17 times.

In nine of those games, Tulsa scored at least 50 points. In eight of those Tulsa wins, the final margin was at least 41 points.

The most glaring examples of the difference between the 6AI haves and have-nots: In this weekend’s games, Jenk crushed Southmoore 90-9, top-ranked Bixby beat Westmoore 73-6, and Union beat Edmond Santa Fe 62-21.

Tulsa-area 6AI schools are Bixby (first year in this category), Union, Jenks, Owasso and Broken Arrow. From the Oklahoma City area, Mustang and Yukon, there are three schools from Moore (Moore, Westmoor and Southmoor), three from Edmond (Memorial, Santa Fe and North) and two from Norman (Norman and Norman North). Enid is the only non-urban school in 6AI.

Tulsa’s dominance this season is business as usual.

In the year Every championship in the state’s largest division from 1996-2021 was captured by a Tulsa-area program. Since splitting from 6A in 2014 — when the 16 largest schools were placed in 6AI and the next 16 in 6AII — Tulsa teams have owned both divisions. Since the 6AII thing, Bixby has won seven titles and Booker T Washington one.

In 6AII this season, the change of pace looks to be the champion. Stillwater remains dominant.

At 6AI, Bixby has a 57-game winning streak. Union is powerful. No other team is in the championship conversation.

In the year The 1995 Midwest City Bombers were the last non-Tulsa football team to reign in the state’s biggest division.

During Saturday’s interview with Mark Rogers, I wanted to know this: How sick of the OKC area coaches are the Tulsa schools who have annual wins?

“I really don’t hear many complaints here. I think Rogers, publisher of Norman-based VYPE Oklahoma magazines, feels everyone needs to improve. “(Mustang coach) Lee Blankenship knows what’s going on in Tulsa, and that’s what he’s trying to (replicate).”

Rogers’ Credentials: Involved in publishing Oklahoma Preview Magazines since 1995. He is an Oklahoma City sports animal radio host and devotes significant talk time to high school football. Rodgers will provide play-by-play during Oklahoma’s prep games live on Skordle.

As a three-sport athlete at Blackwell High School, about 60 miles north of Stillwater, Rogers was a sophomore tight end and linebacker for the 1985 Blackwell football team that captured the program’s first district title since 1959. There was no district. From the title to the Maroons.

As Bixby beat Owason 49-14 on opening night, the Spartans tied the score by 35 points. In 21 games involving 6AI teams this season, the final margin of victory was at least 35 points. In 12 of those 21 games, the winner totaled at least 60 points.

In the Tulsa and OKC dynamic, the three wins by OKC-area teams were Norman North’s 57-50 overtime victory over Broken Bow and a 10-point win at Alan Trimble Stadium (Jenks has lost just 19 times in its last 35 seasons). It was also the Mustang’s 27-17 win over Iowa.

“Overall, I think the (Tulsa-OKC) mismatch is going down,” Rogers said. “I think the average teams here are getting a little closer, but nobody’s at Bixby’s level. Everyone is chasing Bixby now. Maybe Union can compete with them this year.

“Are there better players in Tulsa? yes. They also tend to move more. There is much more to transfer than in Oklahoma City. But Norman and the Mustangs played well against Broken Arrow and Owasso, and Norman North beat Jenks this year.

Finally, Rogers added, “I think everyone is chasing Bixby.

Next weekend’s 6AI schedule includes undefeated Bixby visiting the four-loss Moore Lions, Union visiting the four-loss Edmond Memorial Bulldogs and Owasso traveling to Edmond Santa Fe.
