Since the ’80s, the MTV VMAs have provided a stage for those artists and musicians who may often be overlooked by the mainstream media award shows. Along with the annual showcase of music video contestants, there’s the much-anticipated red carpet event – where stars line up to promote their latest work and discuss their fashion sense.
This year’s VMA carpet was dominated by the green, black and white color palette and featured a mix of pop, funky and designer gowns, allowing for artistic self-expression to help play off fashion’s monochromatic trend.
Multiple VMA 2022 award winner – and co-host of the show – Jack Harlow hit the carpet in a sleek all-black leather ensemble designed by Glenn Martens for Diesel. Young rapper Toosii wore a green H.Lorenzo leather two-piece set, while JID opted for a full Saint Laurent look and J Balvin gave clean, all-white Louis Vuitton vibes.

2022 MTV VMA’S
Colton Haynes
Colton Haynes had colorful sophistication in mind as he opted for a green Dior double-breasted suit. The flared leg pants were cinched at the waist and rested on a pair of chunky platform shoes. A bare chest added definition to his suit jacket, which was punctuated by a quirky brooch and very minimal jewellery.

Jack Harlow
The show’s co-host and multiple VMA award winner Jack Harlow donned a stealthy black leather look on the carpet. His Diesel look consisted of a leather blazer worn over a sheer fabric high neck top, leather trousers and leather ankle boots. Warm brown shades with ombre lenses completed the look.

J Balvin
VMA performer J Balvin gave the red carpet a clean palette of whites in a criss-cross blazer and wide-leg trousers from Louis Vuitton Menswear. Balvin’s pale orange hair gave his look a pop of color that complemented his sleek black glasses and jeweled accessories.

Lil Nas X
Multiple VMA Award winner Lil Nas X stole the spotlight in a black textured, chest-baring ensemble made of cascading black feather rings designed by Harris Reed. The outfit included a massive three-ring headdress and a six-ring feather ball skirt attached over a fitted pair of black trousers. He accented the look with delicate jewelry from DeBeers.

Lauren Spencer-Smith
American Idol alum Lauren Spencer-Smith looked cute and laid back in a neon green look. The electric-tinged singer-songwriter’s choice included an oversized boxy jacket with wide-leg trousers, a knit top and a fitted baseball cap by Christian Wijnants. She completed her look in style with a pair of green-and-white Air Jordan 1s.

DJ Khaled
Fresh off the release of his latest project “God Did,” DJ Khaled kept things super cool in a tonal gray Prada suit. His signature eye frames featured a subtle shade of ombre pink, while his lime green Nike Air-Force Ones provided a pop of color.

Emerging artist Blackbear chose leather and labels for his red carpet moment. Dressed in a layered Givenchy top and voluminous black leather trousers, the fit was topped off with oversized black frames, Givenchy trainers and a black Vetements beanie.

Superstar Migos member Offset showed up in a sleek all-white outfit for this year’s ceremony. His suit consisted of a one-armed cropped jacket with full trousers, topped off with a pair of white and green sneakers and black shades.

Big Energy rapper Latto wowed on the carpet in a lime green multi-strap super-mini jacket and mini skirt. The vivacious leather fit was accented by a bejeweled silver bag and lime green mules.

Kane Brown
Country singer Kane Brown became the first male artist to perform at the VMA’s and made a stylish appearance on the carpet in a full Prada look. The black satin suit featured a single breasted jacket and cargo pants with a green open collar shirt worn underneath the jacket. Black leather ankle boots and Vacheron Constantin jewels finished off his ensemble.

LL Cool J
Event emcee LL Cool J was dressed in his signature street style; head covered in beanies, shades, gold chains and sneakers. His leather bomber jacket, black T-shirt and black leather pants were matched with a pair of black patent leather Nike Air Jordan 1s with a gold Swoosh and a gold Cool J four-toe ring.

Music icon Avril Lavigne returned to the red carpet in an uncomplicated all-black Versace skater look that was enhanced by her fiery orange and blonde locks. Her oversized pants were held up by a black leather belt with layered metal chains.

Celebrating his latest music release, JID strutted down the VMAs red carpet wearing head-to-toe Saint Laurent. His all-black look consisted of an intricately knit top paired with shimmering black corduroy pants. He completed the look with black leather boots and jewelry.
