Roanoke, Va. – A Roanoke cafe known for serving delicious food and smiles is getting recognition from the community.

On Thursday, the Roanoke Regional Council announced their 2022 Small Business Inspiration Award to Chris’s Coffee & Custard.

Chris Coffee & Custard, created by Beth Woodrum, is located in Roanoke and provides employment opportunities for youth with special needs, the council said.

Beth’s son Chris has Down syndrome. She had a dream for Chris and others in the community, according to Chambers.

“There needs to be a place where our gifted teenagers can work,” Beth recalled in an April Sweet Tuesday interview on 10 News.

That dream came alive through the cafe.

“They make all the drinks. They make all the food items. They’re here serving and taking orders. They do every job we have,” Beth told 10 News.

Roanoke Regional Council President and CEO Joyce Waugh said small businesses were selected as recipients of the Inspiration Award, which was established to recognize exceptional stories.

“Our Small Business Celebration Committee unanimously selected Chris Coffee and Custard for this award, and they hit a home run,” said Waugh.
